We had the good fortune of connecting with Nikki Milton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nikki, how does your business help the community?
When you are a small business owner, just about everything you do is marketing. However, marketing is a BIG. WIDE. WORLD of choices, and platforms, and methods. How in the world are small businesses supposed to know which path to follow? I see them. Trying to figure it all out on their own. Watching their peers and competitors. Hoping to uncover the ‘secret’… THE tip or trick that will finally propel them from where they are to where they want to be. And I’ve heard the horror stories. Hiring virtual assistants, or marketing experts, or coaches that just can’t seem to get these businesses over the line to success. Disappointing experiences that wasted both time and money. These experiences shape us. They convince us that blogging OR social media OR website design simply doesn’t work. The truth is… they all work fantastically for the right businesses with a clear mindset and vision and focus on the impact they want to make in the world. My company, Marvel Marketing Squad, offers branding and marketing training, as well as monthly content marketing support for small businesses who are tired of sharing other people’s content and sending their traffic away 100% of the time. We aim to empower small businesses to get off the copycat treadmill when it comes to marketing and get clear and focused on who they are, the impact they want to make in the world, how they want to show up, and who they serve.
What should our readers know about your business?
Marvel Marketing Squad focuses on branding consulting and training, as well as content marketing support. The main goal is to prepare small businesses to be successful in marketing. Every marketing method, channel, or platform works. You can find people right now who are rocking it on Facebook, killing it with video, some have a highly viewed blog, others are mastering the ad game, and many know their way around a solid funnel strategy. You have to understand that there is NO tip or trick that works 100% of the time for everyone. You can’t copy some other business’ path to success. If marketing isn’t working for you it’s because you are trying to do it the hard way – some else’s way. We encourage these businesses to get really clear on who they are, how they show up, and who they serve because if they aren’t clear on what they bring to the table for their clients and customers, they are confusing the audience they so hope to win over.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a total comic book collecting, superhero-loving, comic-con going, straight-up geek! I kickstart new board games, dragons are my spirit animal, and I read all the books before the movies come out. I’m always down for a tour of the local board game shops, comic book stores, and independent book stores. If it’s the right time of year, Denver Pop Culture Con or the Renaissance Fair are great destinations as well. I’m usually down for a weekend trip during summer to Estes Park, Glenwood Springs, or another yet-undiscovered mountain town for much-needed R&R. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My first foray into branding was watching a presentation from Marty Neumeier and discovering his book on branding, The Brand Gap. It just made so much sense to me from a professional perspective. If mindset truly is everything, then how people think and feel about what we do is paramount to our success. In the two decades since that experience, I’ve found that far too many small businesses skip this essential piece when building the foundation for their work because they don’t truly understand it. I would recommend Marty’s work to anyone who owns their own business as the place to start.
