We had the good fortune of connecting with Lucas Flores and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lucas, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
Simply put, I hope people remember me as a funny guy who was serious about his craft. Ideally, I believe the goal of any artist is to create work that becomes indelible and transcends their individual experience on this planet. One day I hope to construct something timeless that is positively impactful and perpetually inspires others. I still have so much to learn and it will certainly be a long journey to arrive at that level. But I think if you work hard enough, you don’t find the way, the way finds you. More important than being remembered for my work, however, is ultimately being remembered as a good person. I want to be able to look back and know I did things the right way and pursued my passions on my own terms. Continuously curating integrity is crucial to me as an artist and as a person. If I can do that in a way that simultaneously elicits a certain questioning of oneself and makes people laugh, then that is a considerable foundation on which I can build my legacy.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Flo Res Cinema is a boutique motion design studio that specializes in experimental product visualization. What sets me apart from others is my innate desire to cut through the innocuous and instead thrive off the allure of the unknown and overlooked. Because of the creation process that I implement, I often describe myself as “the oldest young person of all time.” I produce most everything digitally but decipher everything in an analog fashion in hopes of preserving some notions of patience and quality and not becoming solely reliant on technology. In a time that communication revolves around immediacy, I feel like many people want to put out as much as they can as fast as they can. And while that might work well for them, for me both the process and end goal are different. If you want a product that is meticulously shaped and refined, then I am your guy. I think it comes down to my inability to shake the thought of “What can’t I do?” in the 3D space that has pushed me towards this chasm of artistic exploration. Transitioning from primarily cinematography to solely motion design has been a significant shift, but a captivating one as well. This progression has propelled me to a platform where I am able to traverse the depths of my imagination without an excessive reliance on external personnel or resources. And, in addition, developing a robust 3D arsenal profoundly amplifies my knowledge of cinematography and filmmaking in general. Even though I have come so far in such a short amount of time, I know I have barely scratched the surface of this newfound medium and that is what excites me the most. The journey certainly has not been easy, but that’s what makes it enjoyable and worthwhile. Creating art is not about the prize at the end of the road, but embracing the adventure and appreciating the chase of that elusive notion of “What’s next?” We all face challenges and deal with them in different ways. I choose to constantly create innovative imagery as a way to keep my mind distracted from the melancholic. The biggest lesson I have learned is that it is okay to say no. Understanding how to value yourself as an artist and develop a deep respect for your work and time can incite conflict and stress but are necessary growing pains if you want to take that next step in your career. I want the world to know that Flo Res Cinema is serious about making your brand look not only visually stunning but equally ineffaceable. If you are looking for something engaging and evocative, that inspires one to think, then let’s make it happen. My best project is my next project, so come be a part of the disruption!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I think the best way to start things off is by devouring a tee time at Fossil Trace Golf Club in Golden. Not only is it visually stunning but the back nine is very gettable even for a schlub like myself. After that I would say head over to 4 Noses Brewing Company in Broomfield for some “après swing” if you know what I mean. They have a vast variety of topnotch brews crafted to fit any taste. For those feeling up to the trek, I also highly recommend Funkwerks in Fort Collins. This place is a sour beer lover’s paradise and it does not disappoint. After becoming well hydrated, a hike at Chautauqua in Boulder is definitely in order to help burn all those carbs. Venture down to Pearl Street and grab dinner at Pasta Jay’s afterwards and, as a nightcap, catch a feverous rock show at Larimer Lounge in Denver. I enjoy that place particularly because of its unpredictability; you never quite know what you’re going to get, but you can bet it’s going to be a good time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my family, each of whom provides their own particular aspect to my success. My mother embodies strength. Even through her enormous physical and emotional struggles, she shows inconceivable selflessness every day to everyone she encounters. The crux of my imaginative spirit was bred by my father. I learned at a young age the art of ingenuity, as he taught me to improvise with whatever is available – and to do so with a comedic bent if possible. My big brother offers a beacon of stability. Kind, generous, and fun to be with, he always makes sure I have everything I need – then dares me to dream big. My older sister is my biggest fan. Her genuine excitement about my work pushes me to continue to one-up myself with each new endeavor. My little sister, the hardest working person I know, tirelessly strives to create the best life for her daughter. She instills that same work ethic in me. But my young niece is the one who lends the light of inspiration that continues to dawn during the darkest moments of my existence. Her jubilant curiosity keeps me feeling young and fuels my introspection. I recognize how fortunate I am to have a family that not only fully supports my pursuit of a creative career, but has also given me the tools, encouragement, and motivation to do so.
