We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamie Manning and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always loved photography. It’s always been something that has brought out a passion and fire in me. And when I had my son, I craved to document every moment possible. But as a single mom, I couldn’t afford much when it came to buying portrait sessions to document his growth. So for the first few years, I saved until I could buy myself my own camera. I YouTubed everything, practiced on him every chance I could get, and eventually started taking photos of family and friends. After a year or two of learning, practicing, and improving I was encouraged by family and friends to start my business after sharing my work. It was intimidating for sure, but photography is something that takes away the mundane of life and sparked a passion and love for documentation that I’m still actively pursuing every day! It provides a way to do something I love to do every day while earning an income for my little family as well!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I don’t photograph to show the world what it looks like, I want to show the world to feel the emotions and story behind my photos. I am a documentary lifestyle photographer and I aim to capture the raw emotions and love when I am in my sessions. I don’t expect my clients to sit still and look perfect, we come into our sessions and talk about their stories and the ups and downs that life has brought them as they have come together as a couple and a family. My sessions are filled with laughter, love, movement, and sometimes even tears. This has been a challenge for me because as I am pushing my clients out their comfort zones, I too am stepping out of mine. You need to show your own vulnerabilities in order to get to see others in return! Every session presents a new adventure, new emotions, and new discoveries!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a mountain girl and would rather be exploring outside than downtown socializing! I would say my favorite places to explore are little mountain towns, and the good news is, is Colorado is full of them! Durango’s beauty is something that can take your breath away and Grand Lake is cozy and peaceful!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I credit my son with every success I’ve accomplished in the last 7 years. I was in a very dark place before he came into my life and he pushes me to be a better person every single day. The name of my business is Sunshine and Rain Photography and it is dedicated to his nickname since birth which is Sunshine. He brings the sunshine to my rain.
