We had the good fortune of connecting with Harmony Bowman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Harmony, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I grew up the flower child daughter of an herbalist mother and cannabis advocate father in Portland, Oregon. My mom always said her favorite activity was ‘digging in the dirt’ and she used our garden’s bounty to craft her legendary homemade salves, dry flowers for facials and potpourri and even blend herbs to make the most divine seasoning salts.
While I once found this lifestyle uniquely embarrassing (I was bringing organic arugula salads and apples from our orchard for lunch long before clean eating was mainstream), I ultimately embraced my upbringing and discovered my own personal commitment to the environment and sustainability. My mother’s love for making beautiful products instilled in me a deep passion and appreciation for the power of plants. Many years later, my career in marketing led to my obsession with finding clean, non-toxic products that aligned with my early-instilled values and fit with a modern lifestyle.
My relationship with cannabis is deeply personal. As a runner, I was never very interested in smoking but I had been using topical CBD-infused products for years to calm inflammation and soothe sore muscles after a workout. I’m married to a professional runner and it was easy to see that our aches and pains hurt less and healed faster when we treated them with topical CBD.
In late 2017 I became very sick and CBD became essential to my daily routine and recovery. I spent months in pain, constantly searching for relief. I have always been a proponent of alternative medicine and was wary of taking pain medication for an extended time. And more than ever I was focused on detoxing my body and avoiding the chemicals and toxins commonly found in skincare products. I was disheartened to learn that words like natural and clean often have no legal basis, and many CBD products lack beneficial ingredients beyond CBD or contain chemicals, preservatives or other ingredients I didn’t want to use. After trying almost every product on the market, I took a page from my mother and began making balms, oils and bath soaks. And so began my own line of CBD-infused topicals. These are the products that saved me when I was at my worst and now keep me at my best. Whether you are seeking to restore or maintain peak wellness, my hope is that these products will help get you there.
I am deeply grateful for my positive experiences with CBD and my intention with Blue Willow is to help others achieve their wellness goals through the healing powers of this incredible plant.
What should our readers know about your business?
Blue Willow is a natural luxury skincare brand offering products formulated with CO2 extracted, full-spectrum CBD oil. Blue Willow products are also infused with carefully selected botanicals and essential oils. The brand was born from my desire to create high-quality, effective and clean CBD-infused topicals.
The feedback I get most frequently from customers is that the scent is amazing. I worked with the talented Anne McClain behind MCMC Fragrances to develop a luxurious signature scent for the products. I wanted something different from the citrus, lavender or hippie scents so often connected with cannabis, but that was still totally clean and natural (Side note: Fragrance has historically been a dumping ground of toxic ingredients in seemingly clean products, and in an effort to remain transparent, we share every ingredient on our website). We landed on a woodsy floral, with cedarwood and sandalwood balancing Indian jasmine for a unique and beautiful fragrance that I couldn’t love more. I also often receive very positive feedback on the packaging and design, which I put a lot of time and effort into creating. My opinion, though clearly biased, is that the packaging and fragrance combination make Blue Willow clearly standout among the competition.
While each of our products is special, our balm is particularly unique. It’s oil-based, but never greasy, and made without water or waxes. The result is a one-of-a-kind texture that is both rich and decadent and incredibly light. It’s a cross between a body butter and a balm and I have yet to find anything else like it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to Aspen in the summer – there is nowhere better to spend an entire day outside. My perfect day is a morning run in the mountains followed by a soak in the river and a smoothie or bowl at Spring Cafe, I’d spend the evening getting dinner and drinks with friends on the patio at Meat & Cheese or Matsu.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I shared a few last time… if I think of more, I’ll email! 🙂
