We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Linert and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Creating connections! A large part of my work and passion revolves around connecting people to one another through music education and performance. Good music can stand alone as a wonderful facet of life all by itself, but it can be even more powerful to enhance lives through meaningful connection. Giving someone the gift of music education or a meaningful performance is one of the greatest gifts one can give!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Hi, I’m Michael Linert, a musician looking to connect with vibrant, passionate, loving people through performance and education.

These people introduce themselves to me following performances in opera houses, concert halls, recital venues, schools, homes, and on various city streets. There is no experience quite like when I can vividly see my music resonate with others!

I most frequently sing and play cello, and my musical tastes vary from a very sparse, minimalist approach to music making, such as pieces for solo cello, to the grand, spectacular approach, such as in operatic or orchestral performances.

The music that I perform and teach is frequently from 1700-1900, some of my favorites being by J.S. Bach, Handel, and Dvorak, and I also enjoy composing my own works, typically in an introspective or humorous character.

In every style of performance, I seek to engage with others through common experiences. This requires an openness and desire to connect from myself as well as my audience, and even with the greatest intentions, I find it a rare, exquisite experience to truly connect with someone in a lasting, memorable way.

It is this elusive aspect of the human experience which I seek daily through my practice, performance, and teaching to find, and I can only hope that it may be with you. Please join me on this journey!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For a one-day visit, I first show them my local haunts in Westminster: Westminster City Park (including the fish sculpture, veterans memorial, and viaduct murals. I then like to take them up to Lookout Mountain, Dinosaur Ridge, and Red Rocks Amphitheater often with a lunch at Bob’s Atomic Burgers and a stroll by the riverside. I then like to take them on a tour of Denver, often focusing on the many sculptures and parks around the area.

If my guests stay longer, I like to take them up to Boulder’s Pearl Street, Denver’s Museum of Art, a concert at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, and/or the Denver Zoo. We typically also go on one or more of the many hiking trails nearby. There is so much to see and do in the Denver area!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Bill Ickstadt – He was one of my first music educators, and has inspired much of my work to use music as a service towards connecting others. I am very thankful for his passionate work for his community.
