We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Frim and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
Success is personal. It’s subjective. There’s no one clear form of success to be achieved by everyone. The way I define success is by doing whatever makes you the happiest; being with the people who make you the happiest; in the places that make you the happiest. Success is something that’s felt, not something that is measured.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Art has always been something I’ve enjoyed and others have said I’m gifted at. Painting, drawing, crafting, you name it, I love it! Photography however, captured my attention more than any other art form. It requires a mind/body interaction that no other art form (in my experience) has ever needed. Delving into photography gave me a new view of the world around me and a new appreciation for the little things and unseen sights.
From a professional stand point, it’s only been in the last year or so I have decided take my skills and use them to start a business. It has not been an easy task to say the least. I struggle with a lot of self-doubt and critism, something I think most artists can relate to. Pushing past that and realizing I have a skill was very difficult, but in doing so I’ve instilled more confidence into myself and my abilities.
Starting a business was also challenging in the sense that I didn’t know where to start. There are so many things to consider when creating a new business that I had never thought of until diving in. Luckily I had help from wonderful people in my life, who made it more understandable and less anxiety provoking. I’m still actively working on it, but I have a much better idea of where I want to take my skills and what I want to do to grow my business.
Taking photos makes me happy. It eases my mind and helps me forget my worries. Photography is a de-stresser and it’s also a way to make people happy. Photography gives me the ability to do this by making someone feel special with a nice photo. That’s what I want my business to be about – making people feel good. And If I can sell some of my prints on the side, that doesn’t hurt either.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In and around the Denver area there are many fun spots to go hang out and a lot of activities to choose from. If I had a friend visiting I would take them to the Washington Park neighborhood to walk around the park and see all the different style of houses. Around that same area is south Broadway, which has some of my favorite hangout spots like The Dive Inn and The Historian. There’s also a lot of fun shops to checkout that carry old vintage items and clothing. Another night would include an evening out in Rhino and ending at the Larimer Lounge to hopefully catch some local music. For day adventures, there’s always Cherry Creek State Park for all kinds of fun activities, and of course checking out Red Rocks is a must! Hikes, biking, fishing, music and so much more. It’s hard not to find something to do in the Denver area.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe so many people credit to where I am today. Throughout my life, I have had a lot of support in my photography abilities and help growing my skills to bring me to where I am today. First person to come to mind is my mom (no surprise). She has always encouraged me to do more with my photography and pushed me to share it with others. It was with that encouragement I began trying to improve my skills and knowledge of photography.
Second shotout goes to Matthew Meloney, another local photographer in Lyons, CO who, more or less, took me under his wing and gave me more knowledge and subsequential training than I think he even realized. In the short time I’ve known Matt, he’s made a remarkable impression on my abilities as a photographer by simply showing me some tips and tricks here and there and being able to talk shop.
Third shout out goes to my partner, Garrett Long, who from the start encouraged me to do more with my photography. He helped me see the true potential in my work and helped guide me into starting my own photography business.
The encouragement and guidance from these people are a huge reason for why I am where I am today. I couldn’t have done it without their support, influence and commitment to my success.
