We had the good fortune of connecting with Betty Yip and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Betty, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of Clover Kids Dentistry is authenticity. Our mission is to provide the most comfortable dental home for our young patients and their families so they can have a early start to a lifetime of healthy, bright smiles. We strive to deliver enjoyable and positive dental experiences for all who come through our doors. If parents inform us that their children are nervous or anxious about the visit or had previous unpleasant experiences, we go the extra mile to try to change that mindset. We ask the parents about their children’s hobbies, interests or favorite shows so that when they come in, we can chat with them about those topics and have their favorite show on. These thoughtful gestures make the children feel more at ease and heard. If the parents themselves confess they had previous unpleasant dental experiences, we reassure them that it is normal to have their reservations and to try their best to send good vibes to their children during their appointments. Our families see that Clover Kids Dentistry is nonjudgemental, realistic, and genuine when it comes to dental care, treatment, and compassion for our patients.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Pediatric dentistry is my second career and I absolutely love what I do, everyday. It is funny how my first career and passion, baking, led me on the unassuming path to dentistry. After graduating from Yale University, I pursued a career in culinary arts, working for top chefs, baking furiously, and ultimately helping to open an acclaimed bakery in West Village, NYC. Working in restaurants and bakeries provided a strong hospitality background, steadfast work ethic, and “the show must go on” attitude. When making the career switch to dentistry, I took these qualities and applied it to my studies and bedside manners with patients. The path was not easy – the science classes were challenging and the nonstop examinations were mentally exhausting. The skills I learned from my culinary days were easily and gladly applied to my dentist career. My patients appreciate my well-rounded, approachable personality. I explain dentistry in understandable language that is nonjudgmental and comprehensive. I also lead my staff by example with a “leaders eat last” mentality. I want the world to know that dental wellness is attainable and necessary to whole body health and starts with small habits achievable at home.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Denver is an incredible city with the best of everything: weather, mountains, food, drink, music, scenic views. A week itinerary would include taking the airport rail from DIA to Union Station and having a drink and apps at Mercantile Dining and Provisions. Lodging would be at the Ramble Hotel, home of Death & Co, the cult favorite speakeasy from NYC. The next day would be going to get some Asian-inspired pastries at Tokyo Premium Bakery in the morning as carb fueling en route to Colorado Springs for the Manitou Incline and the Garden of the Gods. Returning that evening, sushi at Temaki Den at The Source Hotel. The next day would include grabbing some breakfast burritos with green chili at Santiagos and checking out the art district in RiNo. We would meet up with some friends at Avanti Food & Beverage and get some arepas at Quiero Arepas. A good day trip would be a drive to Estes Park and see all the elk during their mating season around the fall time! The drive to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park would be on point with snacks from Maria Empanadas and Voodoo donuts. A trip to Denver would not be complete without a concert at Red Rocks and pizza from Cart Driver.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate my shoutout to one of my favorite books, The Little Prince or Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. I read it many times in the different stages of my life, in both English and its native French. I always learn something new and wise with each read. Transitioning from childhood to adulthood, I find myself in situations where my adult thoughts are so different from my child thoughts! I often think back to the part of the book where the prince contemplates the value of a house – the “child” reflects on the beauty of the flowers and trees surrounding the home whilst the “adult” reflects on how much the home costs. Working with children all day, I try my best to think on their level and give palpable value to their feelings and thoughts. “All grown-ups were once children… but only few of them remember it.”
