We had the good fortune of connecting with David Lyon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
If you don’t take risks, you can spend the rest of your life living in regret, or worse, a dull, stagnant life. Taking risks have played a huge part in my life. I left my hometown when I was 24 and moved to a state that was full of uncertainty. Leaving behind my fiancé, my friends, and family. I didn’t know what to expect but what I did know is that if I stayed in Southern California, I’d end up miserable like the rest of the people living in that god forsaken city.

At the time, I lived in my fiancé’s moms house, working a dead beat job with no end in sight. I drank everyday, ate like shit, gained weight, didn’t have a car, my fiancé supported me financially, and I’d do anything to not feel. Did I mention I drank? Like, a lot.

One day I received a phone call from my brother encouraging me to move to Utah and live with him in his condo.. Long story short, I said no and the next thing I knew, I was moving to Utah. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life. I had no sense of direction other than “failure is not an option”. Friends and family didn’t understand and it put a toll on most of my relationships and when I landed in Utah, I felt so alone.

I put my head down and got to work. I applied to every job I saw and made sure to apply to at least 10 jobs a day. Within 3 months, I had a decent job, my own apartment, and my fiancé was moving out to live with me. It was more than I ever accomplished in my life and that was just the start.

I always try to imagine how my life would’ve been if I never took that risk. . Every time I try to imagine it, It doesn’t look good.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
The piece of art I’m most proud of, is the one I haven’t created yet. I’m always excited for the song I’m working on, until it’s out. Once it’s out, I don’t ever look back. I’m always moving forward and working on something new.

I’m definitely not where I want to be at in my musical journey, not at all, but it’s a journey and I’m enjoying the process. I see where I can improve on things and what I should do next, it’s all about trial and error, but you’ll never know if you don’t try.

I encourage everyone to chase their dreams and do what makes them happy. Be the best version of you and keep pushing forward. Life’s hard but it’s what you make it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh man, I’m the worst person for this questions. Alright, let’s try it.

1. Hang out at my house and stay up way too late
2. Drink
3. Eat good food

Repeat!

Seriously though, I don’t do too many things other than work, hang out with my family and play music.

I have a lot of amazing sites to see here in Utah though, the scenery never gets old. I still get amazed by how beautiful it is here. Lots of trails to hike, good food to eat, and friendly people.

I’d say my favorite places to take new people who visit is up the American Fork canyon and Sundance.
