We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephane and Alison Roy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephane and Alison, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
My husband and I own and operate a chiropractic practice and have done so for the past 18 years. We went into practice believing that work life balance was important for many reasons. Working on people to alleviate their pain is both physically and mentally demanding. We realized early on that in order to keep our energy levels high at work, so that we can be our best for our patients, requires a strong work life balance. We set our schedule in such a way that we always take our weekends off, and we have some free hours during the week as well. We are both outdoor enthusiasts and we enjoy a healthy lifestyle. For over 16 years, we only eat the meat and fish that we harvest ourselves, so hunting and fishing is a big part of our life. Hunting by nature entails a lot of hiking, not only during the open season when actively hunting, but also scouting for new hunting spots throughout the year. We do it all, from large game hunting (elk, deer, and antelope), to small game hunting and birding, turkey hunting, fishing, and spearfishing. Our love for healthy organic meat, and our love of spending time in nature is what drives our passion. Three and a half years ago, we started a YouTube Channel called “Catch N’ Dinner” where we share our outdoor adventures, and demonstrate all aspects from the harvest to the table. Our practice and patients are extremely important to us. For many years we limited our time off to three weeks a year and only one week at a time, a limit we placed on ourselves, that we believed we had to adhere to. Over the years, we began to take four weeks off per year and more recently, sometimes five or six weeks off per year. This past year, we took two, two week vacations in order to hunt, for the first time ever. And, we realized, our patients were fine with it. They worked their visits around our time off, and none of them complained. They seem to understand that the time we take off of work to hunt rejuvenates us in a way that enables us to give more of ourselves at the office. We both strongly believe that life is too short not to find good balance between work and play. Way too many people work all their lives, dreaming about retirement to finally be able to do all the things they love. And, often times, it doesn’t pan out well. As the years have passed we’ve become more and more committed to living out one of our favorite motto’s, “work hard, play hard”!
What should our readers know about your business?
We named our practice BodyWorks Chiropractic, because it has two meanings that are equally important. First, we provide more than just chiropractic, we provide top notch bodywork, and, it makes our patients’ bodies “work better”! Stephane has created his own unique technique over his years in practice, which combines a few different bodywork modalities. We start our patients on heat and electric muscle stimulation to relax the areas around the spine that we will be adjusting. We utilize both therapeutic muscle work done by hand, combined with dry needling technique (a type of acupuncture) in order to break up trigger points in muscles. Trigger points are stubborn muscle spasms that can cause referred pain patterns, and can become chronic with time. We also utilize passive assisted stretching techniques to improve the range of motion of joints that have lost their flexibility. After we’ve addressed all of the soft tissue components, utilizing a full body approach, rather than just treating the point of pain, we perform the chiropractic adjustment. Our adjustments are very gentle in nature and very specific. Because of the type of work we do, our office visits are quite a bit longer than a typical chiropractor who only performs the chiropractic adjustment. We’ve had to create a low overhead model in order to be able to provide high quality care. So many chiropractors base their success on “PVA”, patient visit average and number of patients seen in a day or in a week. The problem we have with that, is when you’re more concerned about numbers than outcome, the quality of care is usually diminished. We’ve always based our success on patient outcome and our philosophy is, if we can help our patients get better in fewer visits, they will be happy with the care they received, and they will refer their friends and family. To us, it is a win-win, and we believe this philosophy is what sets us apart from other practitioners.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Stephane and I live in Woodland Park, Colorado, just outside of Colorado Springs in the Pikes Peak Region. Because we are outdoor enthusiasts, our favorite spots are the abundant hiking trails in our surrounding public lands/national forest. And, because we have many freezers full of wild fish and game that we have harvested, we prefer cooking for our friends and family at home, rather then go out to eat. However, if our visitors don’t share our love for hiking and cooking, our area has many tourist attractions to visit. We typically take first time visitors to Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, and up to the top of Pikes Peak, now that the Cog Railway is back up and running again. Cave of the Winds Mountain Park and The Manitou Cliff Dwellings in Manitou Springs, are also fun places to visit. Manitou Springs also has wonderful shops and restaurants lining Manitou Avenue and with the beautiful mountain backdrop, it is a great place to spend the day. We do enjoy going out for breakfast and we love sharing our favorite spots; Adam’s Mountain Cafe in Manitou Springs and Bon Ton Cafe in Old Colorado City.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Big shout out to our awesome patients!! We would not be successful if it weren’t for all of our patients, who have entrusted us with their care. Since we’ve started our first practice, we’ve barely had to do any marketing at all. Word of mouth referrals from happy patients have kept us busy for the past 18 years. As chiropractors, we develop close relationships with our patients, many whom have become dear friends. Their outward appreciation for the care we provide them encourages us every day and makes our work meaningful and enjoyable.
