We had the good fortune of connecting with Gregory Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gregory, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started leathercraft purely as a creative outlet. I’ve always worked with my hands one way or another. Woodworking projects with my dad are one of the most distinct memories I have of him. During the first Covid-19 lockdowns, I was studying to become a commercial pilot, which doesn’t offer a lot of room for creativity. At the end of a long study session, I’d find myself watching YouTube videos of leathercraft. I got myself a cheap tool kit and some poor-quality leather to practice with. I started just making things for myself and my friends, and it took off from there. This is a passion project for me, so I’m not out to sell like crazy, the creative process of designing and making is what I’m after. Having folks carry or use something that I made is such a cool feeling.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was chasing what I thought I was supposed to do for most of my adult life. I earned a BA and MA before admitting to myself that I wasn’t happy. After graduate school, I took a hard look and decided to take some time for myself, to chase a few dreams of mine. I walked across Spain, traveled a bit of Europe, then moved to Hanoi, Vietnam without a plan. These were some of the most challenging yet rewarding adventures of my life. It led me to my future wife, as well as the decision to become a commercial pilot.
Lift Leather Co. fulfills the creative drive that flying can’t. It keeps me sane, it helps me relax, and it encourages me to think differently. I get to live vicariously through my products as they get to travel around this crazy world of ours.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve lived in Fort Collins for just less than two years, and I’m nowhere close to seeing every spot this beautiful town has to offer. Here are a few of my favorites.
Drinks: Stodgy Brewing, Maxline Brewing, Odell Brewing, Town Pump
Coffee: Bindle, Wolverine Farm, Harbinger
Shopping: Makerfolk, Topo Designs, Little Horse Vintage
Outdoors: Spring Creek Park, City Park, Bike Trails
When I make it down to Denver, hands down my favorite neighborhood is Berkeley. So many well-curated shops and loads to eat and drink.
Of course, no trip to Colorado would be complete without at least a day in Rocky Mountain National Park!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Check out Wishbone Pottery, Makerfolk, B.B.S.Metalworks, and JW_Works_ .
