Artistic and creative careers are among the most rewarding, but they also come with unique challenges. We asked some of the city’s best creatives to tell us why they choose to pursue a creative career.

Maxine | Singer-Songwriter-Producer

I pursued an artistic career because when I create music I feel completely in the moment and a rush of dopamine. My artistic journey began when I started classical piano lessons at age six. Now, in my journey I have an artistic career as a dance pop singer-songwriter-producer. I began writing songs when I was in first grade of elementary school. My first song was about moving houses; it was the first big change in my life and I turned to music to deal with the emotions I was consumed by. Anna McCann | Crocheter

I started crocheting because of my mother. Growing up I watched her make the most amazing blankets and gloves and hats. I would sit next to her watching her make these creations and try viciously to figure it out. Her grandmother had taught her and , with a lot of patience, she taught me. I started making more toys and animals, when I became an aunt to my amazing nieces and nephews. When my sister was expecting her daughter, Maisie, she asked me to make a baby rattle that looked like her dog. It was then I started my Etsy shop for making custom dog rattles. I pursued a creative career not only because I love art but I subconsciously knew I needed to get my hands in something that constantly creates challenges for me to overcome. The more I learn about a material or process, I’ve learned that I know nothing, and must dig even deeper! For example, the nuances of glass bending; this is a life long journey of material exploration for me. I can’t get bored. I love problem solving and having variety in my day to day.
