We had the good fortune of connecting with Abby Schirmacher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abby, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started The Curio Cabinet, a digital magazine that covers fashion, beauty, music and more to embrace my passions. The passion project allows me to pursue my loves for writing, fashion and uplifting my community and affords me the opportunity to engage in journalism outside of my full time role. I have always had an entrepreneurial mindset and The Curio Cabinet has taught me valuable leadership, developmental and analytical skills.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art form is storytelling. I have always been curious about the people around me and those within my community, and I’m eager to tell stories to amplify voices that may not be heard otherwise. Along the way, I have developed skills like photography, graphic design, wardrobe styling and more that have elevated my storytelling efforts and have given me the opportunity to become a well-rounded and versatile creative in the space I’m in.
I have achieved my professional goals by wearing many hats and always saying yes to worthwhile opportunities. I’m typically thinking ahead and feel unsettled when I don’t have enough on my plate to challenge me. However, I have learned the importance of balance along the way and I aim to prioritize not only my professional career and my passion project, but I invest immense time into my friendships because my strong support system allows me to think clearly and act confidently in everything that I do.
I am excited that The Curio Cabinet has been consistently creating and sharing content for over a year and as we continue to foster relationships locally and nationally, I am excited to see how we can continue to provide value for the arts community in Denver and beyond.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love to spend weekends in Denver. I am a foodie and am always seeking out the best (and most affordable) cocktail in town. I like to plan my weekends with a mixture of outdoor and indoor activities within the city.
Friday:
– Dinner at Acova in the Highlands
– After dinner drinks, specifically a cosmo, at Avanti on the rooftop if the weather is nice
– Enjoy Denver’s great weather at Recess and end the night either playing pool at The High Lonesome or across town dancing at Disco Pig
Saturday:
– Breakfast would be the biscuit of the day from Rise & Shine
– Walk around Cheesman Park after grabbing a coffee at Thump
– Sit by an apartment pool
– Vintage and thrift shopping on South Broadway
– Dinner at Los Chigones in RiNo
– After-dinner drinks at Gold Point followed by dancing at Meadowlark and live music at Larimer Lounge
Sunday:
– Grab bagels and a latte at Call Your Mother
– Check out one of Denver’s many farmer’s markets
– Lunch at Leven Deli
– Explore the Denver Art Museum, Clyfford Still, Kirkland, History Colorado and the Molly Brown House
– Dinner at Cuba Cuba in the Golden Triangle
– After-dinner drinks at Don’s Club Tavern
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My fellow Co-Founder of The Curio Cabinet, Jordan McClendon, is not only my business partner but my confidant and someone who I look up to. We often joke that we share a brain. It feels like we do as we operate under the same expectations and we are both driven to be successful.
Victoria Glidden is the Music Editor at The Curio Cabinet and I am so inspired by her passion and her versatility as a creative. She writes, makes her own music, designs her own clothing and is always thinking about what comes next, which inspires me to test boundaries and to innovate.
I like to say that my dad, Gary Schirmacher, is the President of my Board of Directors. He has taught me the value in serving as a connector whether it be personally or professionally. He gives the best advice and is the foundation of my support system.
