We had the good fortune of connecting with Abi Horton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Abi, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

As a survivor of domestic violence and having volunteered at shelters in the past, I wanted to incorporate raising awareness for domestic violence into a company. I also wanted to create something; something I could call my own that could help people. The seed that started this snowballing was actually my best friend finding out she was pregnant, so I now have an adorable baby nephew, Kaiden.

What should our readers know about your business?

So Beaus+Babes was created from finding out my best friend was pregnant! I realized, children grow so quickly so saw an opportunity to get our customers to send their gently loved clothing back (at no cost to them) so we could donate it to domestic violence and homeless shelters. Having volunteered at shelters in the past there is definitely a need for it, and also using 100% organic cotton, this encourages a circular economy; helping the environment and the people in it!

After the ideas were born, I spent night after night creating the artwork and designs with my partner. I really wanted them to be uplifting and inspiring so that it could bring joy to anyone who sees them. I should also add I am a full-time voice actor so this was all done in any spare time I had! After months of creating and testing we went live in October 2021!

I am really passionate about raising awareness for domestic violence and to keep providing for people in shelters. Someone who has had the fortune to never have been effected by domestic violence probably wouldn’t have thought about this but sometimes people show up to a shelter with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Spending money on a new wardrobe is the last thing on their minds, and thats why Beaus+Babes was created.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am currently living in Massapequa in Long Island, NY. Interestingly enough, my best friend IS coming into town this weekend!

I would definitely recommend visiting the Lazy Lobster in East Rockaway on a Saturday night for an angry lobster roll and some cocktails! They have live music on Saturdays too! A restaurant around the corner from us called Bar Grazie is yet to disappoint! Great food, drinks and service every time! They have great brunch (and frosé)! If you’re here for a week you’d definitely have to get the LIRR into the city and visit the Empire State Building and see a show! And I would round up the week with a comedy show at Governers Ball.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My partner Danny, he has always been my biggest cheerleader. He helps pick me up when I am feeling down and knows just how to cheer me up when I am struggling. He is also the main production element of the printing in the company.
