We had the good fortune of connecting with Adam De Lucia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adam, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
My work life balance has dramatically changed over time especially being in the fitness business. A personal trainers daily day can consist of early AM clients, while working late with the night crowd as well. Needless to say it becomes extremely easy to “burn out” and feel unfulfilled in the industry. I discovered that if you don’t set proper boundaries with client’s you will always feel rushed and agitated. I myself recently moved to Colorado and I make sure I get out and explore the beautiful state at least once a week (usually a long hike or trail run). That may mean scarifying some income in order to keep myself happier, but in the long run it’s worth it to me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a personal trainer. I’m also a salesmen, marketer, counselor, coach, and mentor. All of these categories fall under the “personal trainer” field. In my profession, we work while others are off. Up at dawn, and sometimes training clients till past dinner time. It can be a challenging job for some, but what gets me going is seeing how my clients feel after the workout. 100% of the time they feel better. Proud. Encouraging. Strong. Powerful. That is why I do what I do. To help people become better then they were yesterday.
I was an avid fitness enthusiast from the time I first discovered weights at age 18. A decade later (with many changes in my career) I finally decided to try something I truly love. Fitness. I will say, being a coach is a lot more then just telling clients to do another rep or drink enough water. We are in the people and service industry, its all about effect communication along with encouraging clients and writing effective workout programs. Learning that skill was definitely not easy. It takes time, and patience to adapt to the vastly changing fitness scene. Like anything, the more experience and practice you perform, the better you will become at a job. Here is a corny metaphor from a trainer, but you have to “put the reps in”.
The top lesson I learned from working in the fitness industry is that no matter how much you care or amount of effort you give, you CANNOT please everyone. That just goes along with working with humans. You will just not click with everyone, and that’s okay. Accept it and move on.
Building my own personal brand “Max Focus Training” is a dream come true for Kaila and myself. It’s our passion. I love sharing knowledge and guidance with clients which can improve there everyday life’s in and outside the gym. Our end goal is to open up our own fitness studio coaching small groups helping them live a healthier and happier life. Maybe have some fun and build some muscle while we are at it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely start with a trip to garden of the gods and walk around the trails. Walk them around Old City Colorado, check out the local artists and stores, and then finish at Front Range BBQ for an amazing meal.
During the week we would check out the local coffee shops: Loyal, Mission roasters, Wayfinder etc which all have some great java. If they were avid fitness enthusiasts as well I would have to take them on some local hikes. Possibly the incline, Open red rock canyon, and Heizer trail for a challenge.
Lastly we have to check out the local beer. Downtown Colorado Springs has some good ones, including Brass Brewing (vet owned). And near garden of the gods we would check out Red Leg Brewery, with a great view and local beer.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes to my lovely girlfriend Kaila. She has always supported my dreams, goals and ambitious. Before we met we both have always wanted to experienced something new and different than our hometowns or state. Two years later we decided together to make the jump from Philadelphia to Colorado Springs and we couldn’t not be more happy. It’s inspiring to us to live in such a beautiful and active community.
