Meet Addison Herron-Wheeler | Co-Owner and Editor-in Chief

We had the good fortune of connecting with Addison Herron-Wheeler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Addison, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of OMF (outfrontmagazine.com) is inclusivity. We were founded 46 years ago by a gay man with the idea of being a space for queer folks, and since then, we’ve stuck to that message and so much more by including an intersectional approach that supports trans folks, women, people of color, and all marginalized groups. The more inclusive we become, the more people see themselves in our pages and want to work with us, whether that means advertising, being featured in a story, writing for us, or inviting us to have a seat at the table.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
OFM is Colorado’s LGBTQ media, and we’ve been around since 1976. We are the only queer media outlet here in the state, and I got to where I am with the company because I started freelance writing and working part time for OFM. I am proof that if a company is truly equitable, moving up is possible, but it was not easy. I had to work very hard for a long time for less pay than I was used in order to get established with the brand. Now that I am co-owner, I would like to provide a space for others to get published and have their stories told, and I’d like to keep growing the business, improving our representation, and providing more opportunities.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to Trve Brewery to listen to metal and drink sour ales, and then to Illegal Pete’s for burrito bowls and queso. I would also take them to a local show at a venue like Hi-Dive, Lost Lake Lounge, or Larimer Lounge and introduce them to some great local bands like Blood Incantation or Dreadnought. And, of course, we’d tour the OFM offices and go up to the mountains to get a great view of the city!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my shoutout to Maggie Phillips, my co-owner. She is the whole reason I am a business owner and one of the people who gave me a chance when no one else was. She changed so much about the way I see the world and is one of the most hard-working, dedicated, and kind people I know. She works 10 hours a day and spends the other hours working on herself and spreading positivity!
