We had the good fortune of connecting with Alena Popovich and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alena, what do you attribute your success to?
Important factors to the success of my brand is the authenticity, and fluidity. My art is an extension of myself, and has always been a genuine representation of my creativity and my brand, with its own set of inspirations. I also do lots of custom work, allowing for versatility and having the capability to capture many clients’ visions, which I am grateful to be able to do!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been drawing and creating for as long as I can remember. Even as a child I was always reaching for crayons, markers, and any surface to draw on! It was always something I did, and felt like it came very natural to me. I am self taught, and primarily developed my craft through vigorous practice, observation, and some serious honing of skill. I began doing mostly portrait drawings in pencil, and now work in gouache paint, digital painting, charcoal, etc. with all sorts of subjects, portraits being my personal favorite. As I continued to improve my drawing, the requests for custom work grew in number, and my entrepreneurial mindset began to surface. I have done everything from family portraits to illustrating medical handbooks. While maintaining my commissions, I made prints of all my works, which it turned out, I had a LOT more pieces than I thought I did! I did this with the intention of opening an online shop to link to my instagram, where viewers could easily buy prints and stickers of of my work. My online shop is now in its third year! Along the way there has been much trial and error, but I am grateful for it all. I consider all the trials learning experiences and lessons for the next, which has helped greatly in my growth as an artist and professional, as there is no wrong to create.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Where to begin! Well, I am a lover of breakfast, so I would simply have to recommend getting brunch at Syrup, First Watch, or Sams No3. A trip down south Broadway is crucial, stopping at Mutiny Cafe, Little Piece of my Heart for some shopping, Angelo’s for CDs and vinyl, and all the vintage and antique stores along the way. I also love stopping into Fifty Two 80s, and Fashion Nation. I am also a boba fan and it’s definitely a mission of mine to try all the good spots in town. Snowl is a great spot to hang out, and fun for instagram pictures. Boss Tea in Aurora, Lollicup in Glendale, and ShareTea in Aurora are some personal favorites. As for dinner places, Bull&Bush, Lowry Tavern, and Casa Mariachi are great to check out. Lastly, I would have to suggest seeing a concert at the Bluebird or the Gothic, my favorites as an avid music lover. Endless fun in Denver and surrounding areas, lots to see!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shoutout my wonderful support system around me, including my Mom, Dad, Grandma & family, as well as my husband and best friend. The list goes on, and I am grateful for all who have supported me along the way.
