We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Harz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
While standing on the summit of Denali (aka Mt. McKinley), the highest mountain in North America, I had an epiphany. Gazing out at the amazingly beautiful expanse of the Alaska Range from 20,310 feet above sea level alone with just my good buddy and climbing partner, Ben Sorensen, I realized that my dream of successfully scaling the highest points on each continent (aka The Seven Summits) may be achievable, but can’t be the sole purpose for achieving.
The months and years of training, preparation, financial commitment and risking my life at extreme altitude just to take in the most stunning views imaginable wasn’t enough, I needed to do something greater if I was to commit further down the path of climbing The Seven Summits, and thus ‘THE QUEST’ Series was born. Combining my love for and experience in mountaineering + filmmaking, with a passion for documentary storytelling and a background in international business, THE QUEST would become a hybrid of all these elements and a brand new documentary production business…
THE QUEST is an immersive 2D + Virtual Reality series designed to take a global audience on an epic “educational thrill-ride” to reveal amazing “rarely seen” stories from the most captivating places on earth. The first installments of the series, ‘THE QUEST: Nepal’ Documentary (72 minutes) and ‘THE QUEST: Everest VR’ Experience (26 minutes), are an extraordinary journeys to deeper understand & climb the most iconic mountain in the world, Everest, and to unveil the fascinating culture, history and nature of Nepal.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Passionate about filmmaking and adventure, with a love for being on either side of the camera, I have been fortunate to have developed a fairly well-versed set of acting, production, writing, directing and communication skills over the years. Combined with a solid foundation in high-level athletics, international business, marketing, PR and event management, I utilize this wide range of experience to work on feature films & documentaries, improvised comedy & radio, and global events. This diverse range of creative endeavors keeps me busy, keeps me challenged, and keeps me motivated for what the next chapters in life may have in store for me
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Depending on the time of year, Colorado has a lot to offer. If you are coming in the winter, then it’s imperative to try to go skiing or snowboarding for a week / weekend in either Summit County, Vail, Steamboat or beyond depending on how much time you have. If your trip carries over into New Year’s Eve, then ‘Decadence’ in downtown Denver is the largest and best NYE celebration in Colorado without a doubt, and definitely the place to be if dancing and partying is your thing!
If you come in the Spring, then a Colorado Rockies game and jaunt through Lodo, Union Station. Highlands and Rino will be in order, followed by some hiking and or concert at the world famous Red Rocks amphitheater the following day / night. For the nature and outdoor lovers, a trip to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park is a must do if you have never done so before, and for the climbers, a day out on the rock in Golden or Eldorado Springs will fulfill all your crag needs.
Summer brings the biking, scooting and top down sunshine weather that CO is famous for. Daytime outdoor activities and nighttime patio festivities from Colorado Springs, to Ft. Collins, from Denver to Breckenridge and anywhere in between is what will be called for.
Fall time in Boulder or up in the high country is an excellent way to take in the continuation of sunshine as well as the changing of the leaves. And if faith would have it, an early season Broncos game or late season Rockies game may just be the thing for enjoying the mild clear blue skies.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The tireless, committed and amazing ‘THE QUEST’ cast & production crew! All my friends, family and not-so-criminal partner in crime, Leslie Nagai, who have supported my crazy dreams and creative endeavors over the years! Last, but not least, all the wonderful people of Nepal who helped make ‘THE QUEST: Nepal’ Documentary (www.TheQuestNepal.com) and ‘THE QUEST: Everest VR’ Experience (www.TheQuestEverest.com) a reality!
