We had the good fortune of connecting with Ali Hey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ali, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I was a mom of two small children with one on the way and my husband was deployed. I was desperate to find a way to help keep my family healthy in a natural and affordable way. A friend introduced me to Elderberry Syrup, and I quickly learned that the store brands were very expensive and my children didn’t like it. I then started seeing it sold by other Moms but was never fast enough to get a jar before it was sold out. After a bit of research, I took a leap and decided to make it myself and give any extras I had to friends, and it took off from there.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a military spouse, I know how much comfort and relief comes from someone taking just a little bit off of your plate. I have strived to make others experience with me as easy and convenient as possible. I love that I am able to offer delivery right to your door step or work place if you choose. I hope that just that bit of service gives people one less thing to think about. I truly believe that giving grace and showing kindness whenever possible has helped my business grow. Putting people first, business second is key.
I believe I got to this place by simply never giving up and continually setting new goals for myself to stay focused during the slower seasons. I did face some challenges along the way with supply shortages. From the beginning, I wanted to run Momma’s Elderberry Syrup in the green. This forced me to grow slowly and plan ahead. For a while, I had to limit the number of batches I made until I was able to create a small surplus.
Small consistent improvements over time create positive results. If I leaped in quickly, I wouldn’t have been able to find the life balance between my personal life and small business.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My must “do’s” for a visit in Colorado, would be hitting up the food truck, specifically Cluckin’ Chicken, Go Fish and BBQ Heaven.
Breakfast at Nanna’s Kitchen. It is a family favorite and has the small town vibe I grew up with. Brew & Q can be a bit of a drive but their breakfast quesadilla and burrito will not disappoint! Just North East of Brew & Q is the Paint Mines. I have never seen anything like it before living in Colorado.
Downtown, I would take them to Building 3 for coffee and then off to all the small plant shops. Specifically Summerland Gardens. Helen Hunt Falls is also a great little hike with astronomical views for anyone coming from sea level. Before heading home I would suggest going to Cerberus for dinner or Red Leg for drinks.
Ending the night at Jak’s in Peyton is always the way to go! They have a great selection of drinks, dogs are always welcome, there’s always some form of entertainment, they are veteran owned and always giving back to the community.
My favorite hike between Colorado Springs and Denver is Castlewood Canyon State Park
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Julie & David Day with Lularoe Desires has been an amazing supporter, mentor and friend. When transitioning from being a Preschool Teacher to stay at home mom who wanted something of her own, Julie & David helped me see that Momma’s Elderberry Syrup could really be something awesome. People just needed a way to find me and I needed to believe in myself. With every leap of faith I made, Julie & David were right there cheering me on.
My Husbands support and encouragement helps me maintain life balance while still teaching our children that you work hard, then play hard. He encourages me to set big goals and then reach even farther. Sometimes he believes in me more then I believe in myself, I am so grateful for him.
