We had the good fortune of connecting with Ali Kole and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ali, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Women need a safe space to explore, reclaim, cultivate and express their sensuality and beauty. I found this in LA and it was invaluable to me. When I moved away from it to Boulder, I couldn’t live without it so I started it here! Wasn’t looking to be a business owner but it was the only way to have this movement that had become so essential to me, and which I wanted to share with other women.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Sensual Embodied Dance exists to open, nourish and celebrate the feminine. There is just nothing quite like it, combining safety, inspiration, vulnerability, acceptance, creativity and FUN!
Women are born with innate gifts of sensuality, emotionality, intuition and life force. Yet over time, life experiences constrain and contort our natural strengths and desires. Sensual Embodied Dance invites and guides the body back to her native gifts – to move, emote, communicate and connect. Moving in our safe space designed to hold and nurture (no men, no mirrors, no judgment), witnessing other women’s courage, beauty and power, women become free, empowered and home in their bodies. Over time they shed cultural and familial programming, transcend shame and limits and experience themselves as the beautiful, powerful magnificent being they were born as.
When I discovered a few different forms of feminine embodiment, I fell in love with how empowering it was to awaken my body, my emotions, and my sensual nature through connecting with my pleasure and emotions, and expressing that through movement. I combined the best elements I found in various studios and teachers into my own unique cocktail – low lights and candles, a safe supportive sisterhood of women, and an ever changing sexy, healing, energizing workout for the body and soul.
Along the way I have learned patience and spaciousness as a teacher, how to support and allow everyone to embrace and evolve (or not) in the way that suits them. I’ve also learned the importance of maintaining my own student journey, to balance connecting with my own pleasure and vulnerability with guiding and opening that for others.
I want all women to know that they are and can experience themselves as beautiful, sexy, alive and free – regardless of age, shape, history or anything!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well of course I would throw a special Sensual Embodied Dance class during their visit to they could open, awaken and enliven themself in pleasure, freedom and full self expression – as well as connect with an amazing group of local women.
Daytime would be filled with experiencing our glorious mountains and active Boulder lifestyle so we’d go tubing in Lyons in the summer, skiing in Winter Park, Summit County or Aspen in the winter, and hiking on Mt Sanitas any season. After an active day we’d soak in my hot tub overlooking the mountains then go for cocktails on the rooftop at Rosetta Hall or maybe the cozy bar at River & Woods if it was cold… then dinner at AOI if they were into sushi, Jax for oysters and fish or the Kitchen, Salt or Mateo for an all around foodie feast.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe a debt of gratitude to Sheila Kelley S Factor and my beloved dance sisters and teachers around the world. A special shout out to my co-creator, Jennifer Bell, and all my local dance gals whose loyalty and dedication keeps me going year after year.
And the biggest thanks and credit to my incredible husband Keith Kegley, who built me a studio and championed me every step of the way. I could never have built this business, or done pretty much anything else, without him!
