We had the good fortune of connecting with Kalea Sanders Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kalea, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
All my life I did the “right” things. I followed everyone’s path for me…went to college received three degrees…attempted to climb the ladder in my field but I hated it and I was unhappy.

After my father died I just wanted to do the things that made me happy (personally and professionally) and social media makes me happy. I found a way to monetize my hobby and help people along the way.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
KSW Social Media Management is a boutique social media management agency that was built off of a true love for all things social media.

We help small and medium enterprises increase their online visibility while maintaining their brand integrity.

Growing this business wasn’t easy and Transitioning from social media manager to social media management agency owner was not easy but I’m proud of the team that I have built and the work that we do. I am most proud of the way that we are able to catch and display our client’s voices no matter what industry that we work with. I attribute that to our strong research skills that stem from lessons that were learned in graduate school.

In business, there is no way to know what you don’t know so it’s important to be teachable even when you are “the boss”. It’s never too late to learn that new skill or change your mind about a decision you’ve already made.

When I came up with the idea to start KSW Social Media Management I had no clue how to price services or even how to start a legitimate business. I just knew that I could no longer work in the criminal justice system or any field that no longer brought me joy. With the encouragement of my husband and friends I bet on myself and took a leap of faith that changed my family’s life forever.

My actions are an example for my children that even when you do all the right things or all the things that you are “supposed” to do, you can still wake up and realize that you can do more. You can change your mind and you can do what you want to do and be just as or even more successful.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m from Detroit, Michigan but I’ve been living in Las Vegas, Nevada for the last 4 and a half years.

I love living in Vegas there is so much to do here that doesn’t require you to ever go to the strip but when people visit, one of my favorite things to do on the strip is to visit the Bellagio Gardens and check out the seasonal design.

I’m pretty low key and I love movies and restaurants, or really any place that is not crowded and allows me to relax and unplug from social even if it’s momentarily.

My favorite restaurants in the city are Herb & Rye for good food and drinks , Echo & Rig for good food and scenery and Marché Bacchus for blunch and a beautiful view of the lake.

To relax I like to go to the Regal Cinnebarre
Palace Station movie theater or get a massage and facial at Vannity Blu from Sharonna.

For friends who are outdoorsy, I like to take them to Red Rock Canyon so I can watch them hike but I like to get my steps in by walking around and shopping in Downtown Summerlin.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I met my mentor Makisha Boothe (head business coach and founder of Sistahbiz Global Network) when she was looking for a social media management company for her business and I was only in business part time (still working a 9-5). After working with her for a few weeks I joined the Sistahbiz network and started receiving business coaching from her. She helped me map out a plan to leave my job shortly after working together and coached me through growing my business to a multiple 6-figure boutique agency.
