We had the good fortune of connecting with Alix Condit and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alix, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I think this is so hard as a business owner. For the average person, I think the outlook is having enough time to pursue your passions, spend time with family and take care of yourself outside of work. As a business owner, it WAY easier for those lines to blur. I find myself reaching for my laptop on the weekend, not because I have to but because I have an idea I am excited about or a project I can’t stop thinking about.

Sometimes I truly don’t mind that those lines are blurred because this is one of my passions. I go in phases where I am okay with being crazy busy with the business and not having much of a life outside of it. That being said I have hit the burnout wall more than once. So I try and find a balance. In some seasons this is trying to work at a coffee shop next to a friend or treating myself to a fun lunch even when am super eager to be heads down in the business in other seasons I am more strict about shutting my laptop at 5pm.

When I feel the burnout could be creeping in, I do my best to allow myself to take a step back and slow down. (that is hard!) but I have learned my ques that I need to slow down better as I keep working. When I am feeling that, I also try to be more intentional about planning my balance. Scheduling things that force you to take a break is what I have found most helpful when I am busy but feeling I need more balance but I am still working on the art of work-life balance.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We are a social media & marketing agency. We focus on creating a community around a business’s brand & creating engaging content that truly resonates with the business’s ideal audience. We help business with, branding, website design, social media, content creation, paid ads & all things marketing. We love working with business owners who really want to tell their story & engage with their community.

I am so proud that we are now an amazing team of 6, each of which brings their own unique skills to the table and I am most excited about our new website launch, which is coming super soon!!! (This should be up by the end of September)

Getting to where we are was absolutely not easy but I learned a lot throughout. 1st I learned that it’ll probably work out the same way if you are stressed or if you are just focused so lean into the focus but don’t let the stress distract you cause that is usually the only thing it adds. 2nd, everything is easy with a team (for me personally) having people to bounce ideas off of, to support on projects and to lean on. Sometimes, this is the Cucamonga team other times, it is my friends and family but people are a must when trying to stay sane. 3rd, When people say your network is so important, they aren’t lying. My network has grown my business far more than I ever could.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Wash Park so I absolutely would take them rollerblading there! After that would probably head over to Home Grown for pizza or Mister Oso for margs and tacos.

When people visit, I love to take them to Larimer Street to walk around and try somewhere new.

If we need to work, Improper City is my favorite place to work during the day.

I think Denver has some of my favorite venues do probably go to a concert or two at Red Rocks, Gothic, Bluebird or Summit.

For breakfast I love donuts from Baked N’ Denver so that would be a must.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Having Madi Garcia (CEO of Professional Storytelling) as a friend has made this journey so much less lonely. Being a solo owner of a business can be so hard. I often have decision paralysis. It has been so nice to have a sounding board who gets it! It is also so refreshing to have someone who can joke about the hard days and celebrate the wins because they get how much they mean!

I have loved ready business books. A few of my favorites were

– Psychology of Money – such a fresh perspective on finance

– Anything You Want by Derek Sivers – loved his outlook on business and building a business for your customers

– The Freelance Mindset by Joy Batra – amazing if you are considering freelancing

I can’t even list all of them but I LOVE my clients they are truly looking out for me and my team. They will always mention us to other any opportunity they get. We are so lucky to work with business owners who are so supportive and want our business to grow.
