We had the good fortune of connecting with Alix Naber and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alix, what matters most to you?
Kindness and connection. This is why I take photos. It’s a reminder that we all have very different lives and are on different paths. When I am behind my camera, I feel connected with humans that I may have never met otherwise. I’ve met people through photography that have shown me the deeper meaning of kindness. Whether it’s love in a marriage after bringing home their newborn, a newly engaged couple staring at each other with so much excitement for the future, or the kindness of strangers to one another at events, I leave a photo session touched by witnessing connection and kindness. It is also something I strive to give back to my clients each time I meet them. There is so much going on in our world today. It doesn’t matter if we have different thoughts or opinions,. What matters is the kindness we show one another.
Alright, so let’s jump right in! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there a person, group, organization, book, etc that you want to dedicate your shoutout to? Who else deserves a little credit and recognition in your story?
I’d like to give a shoutout to my husband, the other half of A-Squared Photography, Alex. He is the definition of support and love. From the day I expressed interest in capturing photos to now, he’s been my biggest cheerleader. He’s spent so much time driving me to various events, location scouting, and being my model for pre-session planning. He has attended more family sessions than I can count; carrying diaper bags, pushing strollers, and holding sticks that kids grow fond of during the session. Don’t worry, I always take him to get ice cream afterwards. He’s my second set of eyes as I edit, telling me his opinion on photos. He may not be taking the photos, but he’s a big part of our business and why I love that I named it A-Squared Photography. I don’t have words to thank him enough for supporting me in starting my own business 7 years ago.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
A-Squared Photography started in 2018 with a focus on family photos. I was a nanny at the time so I gravitated towards capturing families because I spent a lot of time with children and their parents already. That felt like the best place to start as a new photographer. I fell into in-home newborn photography soon after that. I still to this day love in-home newborn photos. To me, they are more natural than a studio and I find that the family is more comfortable having just gotten home with their new baby. In 2019, I started capturing events such as the Keystone Summer Festivals, Denver Bacon and Beer Festival, Breckenridge Wine Festival, and Denver Bloody Mary Festival. My husband and I attended many of these types of events before my business began so I thought it was a natural progression. I really put myself out there to get my first few events booked. I wanted to show myself and others that I could capture the excitement and rush of events that I felt as a guest. What I love about our business is that we cover so many different life moments. From a newborn baby coming home to a couple getting engaged, we are here to capture life’s special moments or simply “just because”. I hope that anyone who considers reaching out to us for a photo session knows that we are genuinely honored to get to see a small glimpse of your life and get to know you. I’ve had many clients who over the years keep coming back and at this point feel like friends. I think that speaks to who Alex and I are. This business has always been a fun side hustle for me. I haven’t intended to do it full-time because I want to be able to carve time for those special relationships with clients and not feel like I “have to” take photos soley for a paycheck. I think that is something else that is unique to us is that we do this on the side because we love it. Not because we need to. We are always appreciative and grateful to meet new clients and have returning clients book us.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I could write a full blown blog post about this with many different variations depending on the time of year. I’ll go with just one option that I think would be fun. If I had a friend visiting Denver for a week, let’s say in the summer, we would do the following trip:
Day 1- Bike around City Park and grab drinks in RiNo at Improper City and Denver Central Market
Day 2- Attend a Rockies baseball game and go to a Rooftop bar like Viewhouse
Day 3- Hike in Boulder or Nederland to see some wildflowers! Mt. Sanitas or Crater Lakes are two of my favorites. End the day at Rayback Collective in Boulder and get some cupcakes to-go at Boulder Baked. They have the best GF and Vegan cupcakes.
Day 4 and 5- Camp in Dillon, CO. Bike, kayak Dillon reservoir, walk around Breckenridge, and hike! Make sure to go to “House of Vibes” coffee shop in Silverthorne for a breakfast sandwich (they have gluten free/ vegan options). Attend a concert at Dillon Amphitheater!
Day 6- Visit Leadville. Bike around Turquoise Lake and relax by the water. Take your guest to Melanzana clothing store in Leadville if they have an open appointment. That is a true Colorado check-list item.
Day 7- Explore Rocky Mountain National Park! There are endless hiking options. Our favorite is Lake Haiyaha. After the hike get a burger and fries at Bird + Jim restaurant.
