We had the good fortune of connecting with Sami Heller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sami, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to offer a way for refillable and plastic-free products to be more accessible and convenient in Denver and the surrounding area. While Denver has several refill shops, there aren’t enough for it to be a convenient option for a lot of neighborhoods and suburbs. We decided to start with delivery so that people could order online and their eco-friendly products would just show up on their doorstep!

What should our readers know about your business?
What sets us apart is that, for us, everyday is Earth Day. The core mission of our business is to better the planet—it isn’t for promotion or marketing or because it’s trendy.

We source products from companies that use very little to no plastic and take back their packaging for reuse. We take back all recyclable, reusable, and compostable packaging from our customers to responsibly dispose of for those that don’t have access to recycling or composting services. We pay extra money to recycle all materials having to do with our business—pens & markers, broken pumps, plastic film, and more are all sent to Terracycle for recycling.

It’s difficult to compete with the hyper-convenience of the world today and to change everyday habits, but that is why we started out as a delivery-only business. We also try to make it affordable—our delivery fee is cheaper than most popular delivery apps!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It’s so hard to choose! There are so many great places in the Denver area and Colorado as a whole—there are a lot of places that we still haven’t explored. This isn’t all encompassing but we’d be sure to go to: Rocky Mountain National Park, a concert at Red Rocks, the Denver Botanic Gardens, downtown Fort Collins, Meow Wolf, downtown Golden and the Golden Mill, Garden of the Gods, Coperta for pasta, Aspen Peak Cellars in Bailey, the art and science museums in Denver, and of course we’d have to bring them to Town Hall Collaborative to check out our shop and the Marketplace!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to dedicate my shoutout to my partner, Drue! From coming up with the name to lugging heavy gallons of soap to various markets with me, she has made New Moon Refillery possible. I could not have started this business without her and I’m so grateful for all of her help and support.
