We had the good fortune of connecting with Allyson Lee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Allyson, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose to pursue a creative career because I discovered that my brain thrives when I have the chance to create things. While I initially pursued vet school, I realized that my passion lies in the arts, specifically music. Thats where I feel most in my element. Creating music allows me to think outside the box. Being a naturally shy person, music helps me to express how I feel in ways words couldn’t. I love being able to tap into my imagination, come up with new ideas, and constantly challenge myself.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always had a fascination for music and other forms of art. As a child I was very timid and shy, which made it hard to make friends. My parents put me in many after school sports and clubs but I never found anything I ever truly enjoyed. I would spend most of my time drawing or playing piano. Piano was the first instrument I learned how to play. My musical journey really kicked off in middle school. I started to come out of my shell a bit more and was able to make a few friends. They expanded my taste in music and we decided to start a band together. I started off playing guitar, but after getting more involved in the Denver music scene I started to fall in love with the bass. I ended up teaching myself for the most part, and then was able to take a few lessons to expand my knowledge. During high school I started to make more connections with people, and I was able to play in a few local bands in Denver. I was extremely anxious when I started playing shows, but the more I did it the more comfortable I was, and the more confidence I gained. Words don’t come to me easily, but playing music is the best way I am able to express myself. Playing in front of an audience and watching them enjoy your music is the best feeling in the world.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve always loved going to different venues to see local bands. Some of my favorite places would be the seventh circle, D3, and the black sheep in colorado springs. The energy downtown is where I’m most at home so we’d also go by mutiny cafe and take a walk down broadway. And then on the other side, I live just over the hog back out west and the wildlife is so amazing. I would definitely take a day to hike some trails close and a stop in Morrison along the creek. I own a horse just outside Bear Creek Lake Park so a ride through the park and cooling off on a paddle board at the lake is a must. Closing it out with a Red Rocks show would make it a perfect trip.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my mom. Growing up she was my only support system, and she has worked harder than anyone should looking after me and my brother on her own. She is the strongest most committed person I know. She has always been there supporting me while I bounced around in different directions, looking for my passions, and I know she will continue to show up for me in everything that comes next.
