We had the good fortune of connecting with Alyssa Kevil and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alyssa, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success is creating a space where people feel truly comfortable and accepted. Whether it’s through a fresh haircut or a hands-on workshop, I’ve built RootBound to be more than just a salon—it’s a place where people can connect, feel seen, and have fun. It’s an experience, and strong personal relationships are at the heart of that.

As a hairstylist, I’ve always prioritized making genuine connections with my clients, ensuring they feel heard and seen. It took me a long time to recognize that my ability to create this kind of experience comes from my ADHD. Once I stopped fighting the way my brain works and embraced it, I unlocked my full creativity and found innovative ways to build community, growing RootBound into the Art Salon it is today. That shift, to fully accepting myself, allowed me to thrive, and in turn, I’ve been able to create a business where others can do the same.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been in the beauty industry for about 16 years now, and while hair color is my specialty, I’ve always been a creator at heart. Whether it’s modern beadwork jewelry, polymer clay creations, or the many other crafts I’ve dabbled in over the years, my art has always been about pushing boundaries and exploring new mediums.

What really sets me apart, though, is how I combine my love for creativity with community-building. That’s what led to the creation of RootBound, an Art Salon, where we focus on learning, growing, and supporting other small businesses through workshops. We’re all about community here—from yoga and plant care workshops to children’s art and even painting with pastels. We do whatever sounds good and fits into our mission of helping people thrive creatively.

I’d say my real “art” is in the way I network, build community, and make it unique and inviting. RootBound is a space where people can come together, learn something new, and feel supported, no matter their background or skill level.

The journey hasn’t been easy. I’m constantly working on finding balance—especially when I want to do everything at once. My strengths are definitely more creative than business-minded, so figuring out how to wear all the hats of a growing business has been a challenge. But it’s coming together with the help of my husband, my trusty “Plant Guy” and the many talented people hosting workshops at RootBound.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is how important it is to delegate and trust others to help carry the load. I still struggle with this sometimes, but finding the right people to support my vision has been key to making it all work.

What I want the world to know about RootBound and my story is that we’re here to make space for creativity, growth, and supporting each other. RootBound isn’t just a business—it’s a community where you can thrive, have fun, and be part of something exciting. It’s a place that makes you want to come back and create more, where everyone is welcome, no matter where they’re at, messy parts included.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
One of the most influential people in my life has been Delia Munoz. We worked together in a salon setting years ago, and she was such a beacon of light for me. At the time, I was struggling with anxiety, and I had lost touch with my own creativity. Delia invited me to take her jewelry class at an art studio in San Francisco, and it unlocked something inside me that I hadn’t felt in years. For the first time in a long time, I felt proud of something I created.

She gave me the gift of supplies, beads, and classes, with one simple yet powerful request: that I must pay it forward when the opportunity arose. Since then, I’ve dabbled in countless creative ventures over the years, through the ups and downs, and now I’m the proud owner of RootBound. Delia has been there the entire time—supporting, guiding, and inspiring me every step of the way.

I’m constantly reminded of her kindness, authenticity, and the way she lives unapologetically. She’s been an anchor in my creative journey, and I still call her with my “I have a question” (which, let’s be real, is never just one!). I wouldn’t be where I am today without her. RootBound wouldn’t be what it is without the inspiration and support I’ve received from Delia.
