We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Bell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amanda, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks has played a huge role in my life and business. Putting yourself out there is a skill and feels like a super power at times. I’ve worked really hard at getting comfortable with that feeling in the pit of your stomach when you are taking on something new and use it as a sign that I’m pushing myself. Having this mindset has led to some really rewarding projects, new friends and business partners and becoming a part of the creative community in Colorado Springs.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I design hand printed textiles and home goods including linen pillows, tea towels, table linens and art prints. All of my designs are rooted in my love of illustration and feature hand printed patterns and abstracted florals with incredible texture. When I’m designing my work I like to dig deep into the intersection of beauty and function. I believe that the simple items we use in our homes on a daily basis can be beautiful, high-quality and cherished! Starting Amanda Bell Studio has been both challenging and amazing. I love having a space where I can share and sell my work and have felt incredibly supported by my friends, family and community. Starting a business has been the ultimate test in putting myself out there. There is something extremely vulnerable about sharing your art and putting your heart into building your business, especially when things don’t go as planned. Yet, it feels great to push through, adapt and change and enjoy the wins. I’m excited to be releasing a capsule collection of table linens this Spring! You can look forward to hand printed linen table runners and everyday napkins. I’m also looking forward to officially opening up my custom design services.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would start the day with coffee and a pastry at Loyal in downtown Colorado Springs; Heartshake Studios and Ladyfingers Letterpress are great local shopping spots; Next up would be getting outside! Colorado Springs is a gem when it comes to local trails and open space, thanks to Palmer Land Conservancy. One of my favorite hikes is the Palmer Trail and if you’re up for some mountain biking, I love my neighborhood Ute Valley Open Space; Nightingale Bakery for a sandwich and pop over to Building Three for more coffee; and finally Phantom Canyon for some great craft beer!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family has been the number one reason that I’ve had success in starting my business, specifically my mom! My mom is my number one fan and has always cheered on my creative pursuits. I also owe my creative nature to her. In the past couple years she has started coming into her own as a maker and is venturing into starting a business herself. It has been fun getting to work side by side on our businesses and learning together!
