We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Little and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amanda, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
ABBY&FINN started when my husband, Lance, and I realized we were spending over $180 a month with another diaper subscription company to diaper our two girls, which seemed crazy! We wanted to use high quality products that were free of harmful chemicals and gentle on our kids’ sensitive skin, but didn’t think it needed to be so expensive. Our girls also regularly didn’t finish a diaper size when we bought in bulk, which meant we were left with a “diaper graveyard” – a bunch of diapers that were too small and couldn’t be used or donated due to open packaging. We worked with our good friends and neighbors, Matt and Kyle, to create a diaper subscription that actually grew with our kids and gave parents the ability and convenience to mix sizes in the same box at an affordable price, while being delivered right to the front door. After diving into the world of diapers, we learned that 1 in 3 U.S. families experience diaper need. Helping these families provide the essentials for their children became central to our company’s mission. For every subscription bundle purchased, we donate diapers to our non-profit partners who use the diapers as incentives for participation in family programs. To ensure our commitment is never trivialized, we included it in the brand name; FINN stands for Families IN Need.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
ABBY&FINN is a company started by parents, for parents, We are dedicated to making high quality, eco-friendly products that are free of harmful chemicals and gentle on kids’ sensitive skin at an affordable price. From the changing table to the bathtub, we offer a flexible subscription model, allowing parents to customize their box with a mix of baby’s everyday essentials with the ability to edit products and adjust shipping at any time. With every diaper bundle purchase, we donate diapers to families in need across the U.S. ABBY&FINN was founded with a mission of helping to eliminate diaper need, and to ensure our commitment, we included the give back in our name (FINN stands for Families IN Need). We are aware that diaper/baby category is a very competitive space, and unlike the other big brands who might have a celebrity backing and/or huge budgets, we are a family run company operating in true grassroots fashion, and we genuinely care about every single aspect of the company. We believe in transparency, high quality products, fair pricing and exceptional customer service. I think what many people don’t know is we are literally a team of 4 full-time workers (all of us founders), so when customers are interacting with us through social platforms or customer service, you are talking directly to us. Interacting with our customers is definitely one of my favorite parts of the business because as parents, we all can relate to one another and I do feel a strong sense of community within our ABBY&FINN family. Being part of a start up company is definitely exciting and invigorating, but there are also challenges. You never truly can step away from the business. You are always working, strategizing, responding to customers, fixing bugs on the website, adjusting orders, etc and that work will continue regardless of weekends, holidays, kids home sick from school, etc. I’ve found that having a strong team that supports each other is really important.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That’s a great question! Funny enough, when I met my husband, Lance, we were both living in New York City and we were thinking of moving. I grew up in Colorado and had always wanted to move back, so I did exactly this and planned a weekend full of my favorite activities to do around the state to convince him that Colorado was the place to be! Must do’s in Colorado include hiking or skiing in the mountains, camping, white water rafting, visiting Red Rocks for either a concert or just walking around, and Union Station, I would be sure to visit the Milk Market and Machete Tequila and Tacos for casual eating and drinking, and Mercantile, Tavernetta, and Izakaya Den for more formal dining,
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Yes of course! My husband, Lance, and our other co-founders, Matt and Kyle. Matt and Kyle are our best friends and neighbors. Start up life is definitely a rollercoaster and there is no one else I would want to be on this ride with. ABBY&FINN started over four years ago with an idea and a truck full of product that arrived at our house and stored in our garage! The four of us would spend countless hours brainstorming and building business models while packing boxes and fulfilling orders in our driveway. Work can be both rewarding and challenging, but I know at the end of the day, we are a close knit group that can overcome any obstacle. As a small company, we all wear different hats and I think it’s our great dynamic and strong friendship that has gotten us to where we are today.
