We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Korban and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amber, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I have tried working full-time at an office, but I never feel like I’m giving it my best effort. I never have the time or energy to do the things that really make me happy. Such as being a mother, or getting to write or paint.

I started my freelance editing business so I could work hours around my family and creative work. I am allowed the flexibility to either work early in the morning or late at night. I also find editing very fulfilling as a job. I really enjoy reading and making a manuscript or project better.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My favorite areas to edit are fiction, non-fiction, and educational works. My business is still young and I am constantly learning every project I work on. I find amazing editors that are farther along in the industry than I am. I like to reach out to them and ask questions. Or if they have written a book I will purchase and read it. You can always learn from those around you and network with them.

The biggest lesson I have learned on my career path, and maybe just in life, is to be flexible. Your career may take a while to get started, or it may not start until later in life. Just work hard and do the best you can in your journey. Learn as much as you can from others that are wiser than you on the journey too.

My brand is that of a person, that never gives up on their business idea, despite speed bumps along the way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Fort Collins. There are a bunch of activities around this area. I would make sure to start the day at one of the amazing coffee shops in town. My favorite is either the Starry Night Cafe or Bindle Coffee. Bindle is great because if it’s a cool morning, you can sit with your coffee next to their outdoor fire pit.

Then we would go see some great shops in Old Town Fort Collins. There is such an artistic vibe there. There are galleries, music venues, and stores with everything you can think of. There are so many places to eat out. The local favorites are the Silver Grill and Ginger & Baker. For a relaxed afternoon, there are so many breweries and wineries to stop at and do some tasting. I prefer Odells because you can get beer, wine, and food at the food truck. There is this special place in Fort Collins called the Wolverine Farm Publick House. They serve coffee, wine, or beer. They sell art from local artists that are so unique looking. They have this great outdoor area to sit and work, or chat with strangers, or read a book. They have a bunch of used books outside that you can just grab and read if you want.

Last but not least, I would take you to Horsetooth Reservoir. We could spend a night out there camping. There are many trails to hike. My favorite is to take my kayak out and explore Horsetooth!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would say that a lot of what I have learned about an editing business I self-learned. My biggest professional role model is Stephen King, the author. I have read most of his books and short stories. From his skills, I have learned how to write. He wrote a book called “On Writing” that really helped me as a writer and editor. That is a must-have in my library collection.

Personally, my mother and husband always support my creative ideas. My mother loves editing and reading herself. I took after her in that way. My husband never calls my ideas crazy. He just says “go for it!”
