We had the good fortune of connecting with Amelia Van Dyke and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amelia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Creating edible works of art has long been a creative outlet for me. Starting my own business was an opportunity to take my talent from a hobby to a marketable product available for others to enjoy. I take great pride in having created something for myself, through hard work, and seeing the smile on people’s faces when they receive the finished product.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is a unique medium… frosting on cookies! The enjoyment of art is personal perception. It takes bravery and vulnerability to put your art out there to be critiqued, judged, and hopefully admired. With each design request I create a unique, custom piece of edible art, designed specifically for that client.
I started this type of creativity as a child when my mom would bake cookies for holidays and we kids would get to decorate them. As I grew the designs got more elaborate and the time spent on edible creativity did as well. My sister Max and I in particular would spend hours on holidays creating edible themed treats. Eventually I began to make cookies on my own and experiment with recipes, designs, cakes etc. for all types of events. I don’t think at the time I realized how often I was doing this. Today I frequently have people tell me stories of their memories of my cookies at a party or a random day at work or dinner with friends. I never knew I was making that impression all those years.
In the sense of creativity this came easy to me. The challenge of making that creativity into a business is keeping the creativity and the joy for the work. It isn’t all fun and games. Some days are more challenging than others, but in general I have found an excellent balance and there is nothing more satisfying than enjoying the finished product.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would spend the entire time outside! That is why we live in Colorado isn’t it? We’d definitely go catch a game, hit a few breweries, spend some time on a river or lake, trail run, mountain bike and enjoy a good campfire.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My ability to be successful is hugely dependent on my husband and family. We have 4 kids and busy lives! They have been my biggest fans and support throughout this journey. My business partner Jon keeps my head on straight and reels my sometimes too adventurous ideas right back in. He’s the muscle behind the scenes, doing all the tasks that keep us afloat so I can be the cookie creator. Without these people this wouldn’t have been possible. I am grateful for each of them.
