Meet Amy Brophy | Life Coach for young adults

We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Brophy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was born in Colorado and grew up as a swimmer. I’ve coached all levels of swimmers from toddlers to Olympic trials athletes and Olympic triathletes. A year before the pandemic I got burnt out on coaching swimming. I needed a new direction, a totally different take on life. I got a job at a brewery. Then the pandemic hit. While deeply grateful for a job in which I got to be with people and collect a paycheck, I realized that I wanted to connect with people on a deeper level in my professional life. A friend suggested I might like life coaching. As I explored this suggestion, I realized it’s the kind of coaching I’ve always done in or out of the water. I was never interested in just coaching swimming. Rather, I always tried to make people better through swimming. I wanted them to define success the way they wanted in the pool. Once I started life coaching I realized I didn’t need the pool to help people succeed in the life they wanted. So I started Amy Brophy Coaching and I’m really happy I started my own business.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started my business because I love working with young adults. I love their energy, the passion they have for things that excite them, but I also see the pressure they are under from society to “fit in”. And the pressure they put on themselves to do something or be something. When I was that age I really struggled with who I was and what I wanted to be. There weren’t many options for help and guidance except to figure it out yourself. Or if there was that kind of help, it didn’t seem readily accessible. I finally managed to figure out who I am and what I want to be, but it took awhile. What I’m trying to do is work with young adults to figure this out earlier. So they don’t have to struggle trying to find the life they want. I feel like I can give them a good guidance and structure to help them because I have gone through those similar struggles. I believe it’s easier to learn tools to succeed when you are young and it’s a bit harder when you are older.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh this is a fun question! Boulder is such a great place to be. I would definitely have to take them hiking. Eldorado Canyon or a hike around NCAR, or Shanahan Ridge has some beautiful trials. There are so many to choose from, but I would want to show them things that not every tourist does. After a hike we’d go get some tacos and a beer at Sanitas brewery. Then we might hit a few more breweries in the area. My favorite is Finkel and Garf in Gunbarrel.
If the weather is warm I would take them paddle boarding, probably at Union Reservoir. It’s a great place to be out on the water and see views of the mountains.
The last to-do thing I’d love to show them is Pearl Street. I mean you have to walk it if you haven’t been to Boulder. There are great restaurants and shops and wonderful people watching!
For dining we would have to eat at Jax Fish House, Avanti F&B, and we’d have to find out where Temaki Tornado sushi handroll food truck is hanging out and get some yummy handrolls!
Breakfast we would either go out to Luciell’s or Walnut Cafe. But if it’s Saturday we could head to the famers market for breakfast there or getting great food to come home and cook with!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I strongly believe in community to help anyone grow. The African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child” not only should apply to children but to anyone and everyone. Without a “village” of my own coaches, my friends and family I could not be where I am today. I think coaching has a really powerful place in the village. I’m yet another resource to help get people where they want to be.
