We had the good fortune of connecting with Marissa Phipps and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marissa, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success is Determination. Determination is what keeps you going when everything is chalked up against you. Determination makes a way, when the way seems dark. Be determined to remain positive & you’ll make it through anything.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I take pride in my art. I create to express myself & my inner world. I do all kinds of art: I paint, write poetry and model. It’s all very therapeutic for me.
What sets me apart from others is that I have had to work a little harder than the normal model to get to my current status.
I had a discectomy (spinal surgery) in November of 2020. I had broken my back & was injured in multiple car accidents following the initial break.
I was able to push through the pain and keep a smile on my face through the months leading up to my surgery, however I had to deal with crazy amounts of pain and medical issues, issues only solved by surgery. Once I had the surgery, I was told it would take 6 months for a full recovery. Not only did I have to rehabilitate myself back to normal health, I had to learn how to model & walk in heels all over again.
My Perseverance is how I got to where I am professionally. In the wake of severe Injury and then Surgery, I learned that hard work mixed with discipline create perseverance, and you can persevere through anything. The trick is committing your mind to the goal and never stopping until the goal is finished. Persevere.
I set goals to get me to where I want to be. But I didn’t stop there, once you reach your set goal, it’s time for new goals. I learned that it’s very important to never stop setting goals, no matter how big or how small.
I want the world to know that if you want something, you will be faced with all kinds of obstacles before you get it. The obstacles are here to test how far you’re willing to go for yourself & your goals. Do you want it or not? Go get it. Stop for nothing.
I want to be known for my personal strength and perseverance. I want to be an example of resilience and positivity. I want my brand to represent both strength and empowerment. I advocate for all kinds of Industries and people. If I can do it, so can you. It’s just a matter of getting connected to the right communities and support systems. I just want to be known for going after my goals and helping others do the same.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting, I would take her to brunch at Tupelo Honey. Then I would take her to the Rhino district where we would take photos of each other until we got hungry again. We’d probably head home after that because were getting up there in our old age.
Next I’d want to take her to RedRocks where we could enjoy the pleasant atmosphere and breathe easily while we catch up. We would definitely go hiking one day then eat burgers and fries.
Crumbl is a must have when you visit. I’d go to a Standley Lake where we could eat our cookies and watch the sunset in privacy.
We would hit the mall and eat sushi at Kona Grill. I know we’d probably get manicures and pedicures and get smoothies and go for a walk.
Little man ice cream is a must have when you come to Denver as well, she would love it!
We love Taco Tuesday, so I would make sure she tried Machetes Tacos on a Tuesday. 🙂
We love food, so I would just make sure we ate good all week. There are endless possibilities in Denver. I love that about this city! The food scene is unbeatable.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have so many People to thank for supporting me on this journey to get me where I am today. Jenn Velez is the sweet, talented Makeup Artist who referred me to this publication. I support her & her work & I hope she goes so far in her career. Thank you Jenn!
Second, All of those who support my work and creativity on a daily basis have my unending thanks and gratitude. I wouldn’t be anywhere without the support of my community.
Next, I wouldn’t be here without Chris Aderhold of Arclight Photography, whom I share this publication with. Ive been blessed to be able to create art & a great friendship with Chris over the course of my modeling career. Thank you for always being such an inspiration to everyone around you. I look forward to watching you go far.
I wish I could list out all those who deserve credit and thanks, but I’ll wrap it up or we’ll be here into next week.
Thank you to those who supported me in the very beginning of this modeling journey- you know who you are. Much love, always.
TyeThePoet, Eric Brown, Julie Gallahue, your encouragement and support has meant more to me than you will ever know.
And A big Thank You to the countless models and friends who support my craft and movement -just know you will forever be on my prayer list, and I enjoy watching you grow into your own niches. I’m rooting for each and every one of you too!
I wouldn’t be here in this interview if it wasn’t for My own undying strength. I don’t give myself enough credit for how far I’ve come, but I will here. I’m proud of myself for being resilient. Im very thankful to be here & answering these questions.
I am so grateful to be living this life, Ultimately, The thanks goes to the One who put me Here on this Earth. I love creating art.
Thank you.
