We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Carroll and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Photography had started off as a hobby for me and eventually turned into a side job. When the pandemic started, my corporate job I had at the time changed a lot like most of the world. I had decided to step away from the job and I ended up taking the plunge to do photography full time. I always say admittedly it wasn’t very thought through and more so impulsive. My mind set was let’s try to do this for real and it’s your dream. It wasn’t always easy at the start but when you are passionate about what you are doing for a career then that drive does help push you through the harder times.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The first reason I bought a camera was because I had always wanted to do concert photography. I had some friends in bands that would play small local shows, I bought my first more low-end camera and learned on that and started with those small concerts. It then grew into landscapes and then portraits. As the years went on, I tried different types of photography such as boudoir, family, weddings and more.
There are always challenges when learning something new and also figuring out if you like a certain genre of photography or not, but I always do my best to do things that I know I will continue to enjoy and do to the best of my abilities. I don’t really like to stick myself in a box so I still do a few kinds of photography. I currently specialize in portraits, boudoir, concerts, and weddings. I do my best to bring my own unique style to everything I do. My favorite thing to shoot is creative portraits such as dark themes and/or cosplays.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Rhode Island, which is the smallest state and also pretty close to other states Massachusetts & Connecticut. I would want a mix of activities so I would visit some nearby landmarks like Roger Williams Zoo, possibly visit the Botanical Gardens and other grounds while at Roger Williams. If there was any local concerts happening, I would make one of those happen and show them one of the concert venues in Providence that I frequent. One of my favorite things to do is explore so I would bring them to the city to walk around and also a nature spot to hike. For food, I like a bit of everything so if it was a week long trip I would try to hit all my local favorites like Patriots Diner, Goodstuff Smokehouse, Sunrise Pizza, Sol De Mexico, Chelos, and a must stop is Wrights Dairy Farm and Bakery for some sweets.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout my husband, Dan Carroll. I am obviously biased because he is my husband and my favorite person but beyond being a wonderful person, Dan is also a very talented guitarist in a band named Gannon. He helps write their songs as well, their music can be found all on streaming services. He has had a rough last couple of years with being diagnosed with diabetes and overcoming some health struggles that came along with it as well but he has always done his best to support me and stay as positive as he can. His band is currently working on writing more music and just recently released another EP, if you are local to New England then you can catch them at a show in December or next year.
