We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Quinn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born in California, and moved to Colorado when I was a toddler. I grew up in Boulder County, and went to college in Denver (MSU Denver) for Human Development and Early Childhood Education. I have always been in caregiver roles- the last ten years as a preschool teacher. After having my daughter five years ago, I decided to pursue doula work and photography in addition to teaching. I love working with families and children, capturing their unique dynamics, and that’s the main focus of my photography.
I have an immense respect for pregnant and birthing people. My own experience having my daughter was completely magical and transformative- it helped me realize that I wanted to be involved in birth work and birth photography. Holding space for folks as they embark on parenting journeys is an immense privilege and I am honored to be a part of growing families’ stories.
I grew up in a loving home and consider being a mother my most important calling. This feeds my passion for working with families and children, capturing their individual relationships and the love they share.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love photographing the stages of parenthood- pregnancy, birth, babies, and family life. I am especially passionate about creating art with with expecting and new parents and documenting their unique stories with their babies and other children. I also do weddings, birthdays, events, school pictures, you name it.
A couple of years ago I felt inspired to get more serious about learning how to use a camera. I enrolled in some online classes and seminars through Birth Becomes You and spent more time working with my camera and editing. It has been a challenge to figure out what to do, but after a lot of practice and help from friends I’ve come a long way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would probably start with some fun activities in Boulder- a trip to the Dragon Tree Spa, Leaf Vegetarian Restaurant, Meta Burger, Falafel King, Pearl Street Mall, Gelato Boy, Boulder Baked, Escape Rooms, and some easy hikes or walks around Boulder and Marshall. The hot springs in Eldorado Springs.
Some day trips to visit Nederland to go to the Carousel of Happiness, and up to Estes Park for shopping and time in Rocky Mountain National Park.
Then to Denver for some fun outings- Meow Wolf, Botanical Gardens, the Denver Art Museum, Museum of Nature and Science, brunch at Watercourse Foods, lunch or dinner at City O City, “Wizards” and treats at Make Believe Bakery, dinner at Bang Up To the Elephant, Voodoo Donuts, and shows at Denver Center for the Performing Arts or Curious Theatre Company.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family and friends have been an incredible support system in helping me achieve my dreams, they have been truly steadfast in their love and belief in my abilities.
My amazing friend Kylie (of Kylie Bree Photography) has been a wonderful inspiration and encouragement to me. She’s the reason I decided to start a photography business and pursue birth photography. Kylie has been by my side every step of the way, mentoring and guiding me. She is so wonderfully talented, creates brilliant art, and has absolutely been an integral part in me following my desire to become a professional photographer.
