We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrew Busch and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Andrew, why did you pursue a creative career?
My earliest memories are of making art. Throughout my education, art and math were central. I ended up making my living with math but always enjoyed art. Once my children were old enough I started dreaming about what it would look like to become a professional artist. I’m only a couple of years in at this point. Going full-time as an artist is the dream but it has to work financially for my family as well.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My current work focuses on landscapes. When painting outdoors, my work tends to be more Impressionistic with a recognizable place. In the studio, I push my landscapes a bit more towards abstraction. Sometimes they look like the places. Sometimes they only hint at them.
I find peace and contentment when I am in nature. I don’t feel anxious or find myself worrying. I feel whole. It’s that wholeness I want to invite the viewer into—that same sense of belonging. Because the natural world is my inspiration, you will often find me with my paints on my back and my three children in tow, exploring the trails, rivers, and canyons of the Front Range.

To achieve depth and visual interest in my paintings I focus on layering and mark-making. I paint with a variety of objects: palette knives, paint scrapers, mason trowels, sticks, brayer rollers, my hands, and sometimes brushes.

I love the process of creating art: the paint, the craftsmanship, the dirt beneath my feet, and joy.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Day in Golden:
Drive up clear creek canyon.
Walk around downtown Golden.

After a couple days getting acclimated to the elevation, it’s time for hiking!
White ranch trail has some lovely views.
I also love Golden Gate Canyon State Park.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t have done this without my wife and our close friends’ continual support. Starting my own art business was scary and daunting and… all sorts of other adjectives. Without the support of the people closest to me, I probably would have given up before I started.
