We had the good fortune of connecting with Angela Brearton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is necessary. Risks allow for growth. Without it, you’d never know if there was a better (or worse) way of doing things. Obviously, not everything has to be a bold choice but without them, life could get pretty boring.
In my own life & business, I prefer calculated risks. I want to know the ins and outs before diving headfirst into the unknown. I will say though – even the spontaneous decisions have paid off in the long run. Challenging myself to continually try new things lead me to being here today.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My photography business is going into its fifth year! That’s honestly insane to me because I never thought I’d do this to begin with. My best friend would say “you should start a business!” and I’d tell her she was crazy, over and over again. Now, who is the crazy one? Surely, it’s me. I could pinch myself and still might not believe all the incredible things I’ve gotten to witness.
During the first few years, I worked incredibly hard to get the basics of a photography business right and find my footing in the industry. By taking on pretty much every type of session imaginable, I soon discovered I wanted to do nothing more than photograph connections between loved ones. This realization lead me to speicalize in the wedding and maternity/newborn, family world!
Since most of my work has shifted to a monumental life moments someone has entrusted me with, I try to make client experience my top priority. Putting in the work beforehand like getting to know my client’s vision, and providing them with suggestions and guidance to help achieve those goals is crucial. Then while shooting, I keep things laid back and fun, letting it unfold as it naturally would, all while still getting the shots that get printed for the mantle.
By the way, I just want to say thanks to all the beautiful people I’ve gotten to work with, that have given me a chance to be apart of their lives. There were definitely days I felt like I wasn’t cut out for it because it can be a tough industry filled with so much talent – but because of you guys, I have gotten to live out one of my dreams. Thank you a million!!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Love love love the state of Colorado! If life had gone a different direction, my partner and I would be living in the Boulder area. We decided to stay in IL to raise our daughter near family, but that doesn’t mean CO is crossed off our list. 😉
If I were to give my BFF a tour of my fav spots, I’d be taking them to Estes first to explore Rocky Mountain National Park. (Fun fact: Logan & I got engaged at Sprague Lake in RMNP!) There’s nothing better than getting to hike around and breathe in the mountain air. Also, getting to see the elk roam around freely? Too cool. Later on though, we’d hit up Mama Rose’s for mouth-watering cannolis & watch the sunset. Then after a few days of galavanting around the cute little shops and RMNP, I’d be sure to take them to Boulder to experience some more breathtaking views. While there, we’d definitely stop by Chautauqua Park to watch the city lights at night.
The beauty of Boulder is that there is always something to eat, do or watch on Pearl Street. We’d start there and work our way to capping off the trip at Lucile’s Creole Cafe for brunch. So, basically, we’d eat our way through the entire trip haha. What’s the point of traveling if you don’t treat yourself to delicious food, right?
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As an extra special shoutout, I have to give credit to my partner, Logan. He’s the calm to my storm and keeps me grounded. Being at home with our three-year-old while managing a business doesn’t come easy, but he supports me in this crazy world and for that, I’m forever grateful.
