We had the good fortune of connecting with April, Cassidy, Chloe, and Ava Guttormson and Mackenzie Harlan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi April, Cassidy, Chloe, and Ava Guttormson and Mackenzie Harlan, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Our mom, April Guttormson, has always had a knack for making events special with delectable food and a welcoming atmosphere. Because of her entrepreneurial spirit, she had been brainstorming business ideas that we could all do together.
Growing up in a big Italian family, wine and cheese boards were an essential part of every gathering. After years of honing in on our craft of meat and cheese boards, it started to become an art form. During the height of the pandemic, all of us girls and our mom were working in grocery stores. It began to take a toll on us and it got us to question, “What are we really passionate about?” The answer came from our roots, food brings people together. Because of all the family time the pandemic brought, we realized how special it is to gather around a meal and spend time together; we wanted to help create that same atmosphere for others. Moda, our MOther/DAughter business, combines our love for creating beautiful things, quality food, and making gatherings memorable.
The team that makes up Moda consists of:
our mother, April
oldest sister, Mackenzie
Cassidy,
Chloe,
and the baby, Ava.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Charcuterie is an art form that blends food and atmosphere. Each spread and board is unique, and can be catered to whatever the event requires. Whatever our customers wish for their dream event, we can create. The more custom the theme, the more fun the board becomes!
We are most proud of taking something we love doing for our own family and turning it into a business. It has been a big learning curve getting our name out there and running a family owned business, however, we wouldn’t have it any other way and we are having so much fun on this journey.
The two biggest lessons we’ve learned along the way so far are: gaining strong communication with each other, and the importance of good organization.
We have mastered the art of taking an event and elevating it with a show-stopping table scape that is the highlight of any party. Our favorite thing in the world to do is hangout with each other as a family, and we hope our customers feel a sense of family and community conveyed with every spread we design.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Our perfect day would start off with coffee from Queen City. Then, we would go to our favorite brunch spot Just Be Kitchen. Next, we would check out the best, in our opinion, local farmer’s market on Pearl Street in Denver. For dinner, we would head to Postino for wine and cheese cause we’re cheesy like that. And to finish off the night, we would make a Run for the Roses for a nightcap.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our grandmother had the amazing quality of taking a recipe back to it’s origins and making food from scratch. Her ability to make each dish unique was passed down to our mom, who then took this craft to new heights by making the food pleasing to the eye. This gift of hers is one that we cherish the most, as it helps us in our business everyday with finding authentic foods and making the most aesthetically pleasing spreads.
