Meet Ashley Sertich | Portrait & Wedding Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Sertich and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
With photography, you’re never done learning. I live the “always be learning” mantra and take classes, workshops, lessons as often as I can. There are so many aspects to master (posing, lighting, editing, etc.). I love to be a student – which marries well with the need to grow my skills and expertise in my business.
Along with education, I try to explore genres and photography situations where I’m not as familiar. Saying “yes” to opportunities, (even if I’m unsure of how it will go), is how I got started in this business! While some choose to find their “niche”, I’m happier exploring different types of photography, from portraits to weddings/events to real estate. I’m never bored…. I believe there’s a lesson in each shoot.
Lastly, I believe it is vital to be dependable. I want to be sure my clients’ expectations are met. If I promise a specific turnaround time, I will meet that deadline. The importance of character cannot be underestimated!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
After spending 20 years in corporate America, I knew I was missing a creative outlet. With a stroke of luck I discovered photography. I spent the next few years studying, experimenting & practicing as much as I could. I started with landscapes before I took my first portrait. And I was hooked! I adore capturing moments in time – a moment that will never be the same, but can be remembered at a glance. From children to families to weddings, each has a story and an air of love. How can that not be fulfilling?
It’s definitely difficult to balance all of life’s responsibilities well. Running a business is tough! Some days I succeed, and sometimes I don’t. But my goal is to always improve and do things better today than yesterday. Photography grounds me. I’m able to be completely present when I’m shooting, and it’s a fabulous stress reliever.
I think sometimes the importance of photographs is underestimated. Ultimately, long after we’re gone, these are the visual memories others will keep. What a gift!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would probably recommend an incredibly eclectic mix of places to visit in Colorado! Obviously, the “hits” shouldn’t be missed (Garden of the Gods, Glenwood Springs, Vail, Estes, RMNP). But as a mom, I know less about the “hot” spots and more about the best spots for kids! We’d visit Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, the Denver Children’s Museum, and the Inventing Room for some creative desserts! The adults would have a spa day at the Woodhouse Day Spa. Then of course we’d need a weekend trip to Westcliffe (Colorado’s only certified dark-sky community) for some night photography!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So much gratitude for all my photography teachers! I love the “community over competition” attitude of each and every person. They’ve shared their tips, know-how and lessons learned. We have a particularly amazing group of creatives here in Colorado. I’m blessed to experience this journey with others! To my friends at the Lone Tree Photography club – thank you for sharing with me, challenging me, and encouraging me to grow. And of course a shoutout to my biggest fans, my family. Without their support, I would never be able to follow my passion. Thank you!
