We had the good fortune of connecting with Aubrey Houdeshell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aubrey, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Authenticity and transparency. I started building my business right before the pandemic and lockdown hit in May 2019. Due to the circumstances surrounding what life has looked like since then, social media is really the tool that has enabled me to reach a vast array of people and build my client base since then. That said, this is very much my first time running a business, so there’s a perpetual learning curve. One of the joys of social media is that people WANT to know about the real person behind the account/business/brand, and respond well to the idea of whoever that is being just a regular person, too. Because of the nature of the work I do, everything is extremely personal with my clients, anyway, and the most effective relationships come from people being able to know who and what kind of person I am.
What should our readers know about your business?
I think the main thing that sets my business apart from others is the very nature of the work itself! Not many people can say they are a full-time, professional Astrologer and Tarot Reader. I think the most difficult thing about trying to run your own business is that you’re the go-to person for EVERYTHING. Not only do you have to provide whatever the service is, but you’re also your own marketing and sales person, your own designer, your own accountant, etc. Also, if you aren’t passionate about what you’re doing, it’s going to be incredibly difficult to maintain the stamina required to start seeing the payoff – literally and figuratively.
Building a brand/business isn’t like an hourly job, or even a salaried one; there will be many unpaid hours, meetings, events, whatever spent in an effort to get your name out there. However, it’s also incredibly rewarding once you get there!
In my case, this business enables me to work directly in my local community and help others to find empowerment and harness their potential to find deep fulfillment and success.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, everyone has to check out the new Meow Wolf! But my favorite spots include the DAM, the MCA, SoBo, and the River Front area. Fort Greene in Globeville also deserves a visit, as does Welton St. Café in Five Points.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my partner, Keaton, who has been my biggest ally in building this business since its inception. Without his kindness, support, and insights, I wouldn’t be where I am today!
