Meet Beatriz S. Gonzalez | Multidisciplinary Artist & Library Worker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Beatriz S. Gonzalez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Beatriz, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I choose to live a life that doesn’t have boundaries to how far I can go. Art is subjective and I appreciate that no idea is limited, everything can be challenged and interpreted differently. If I cannot create then I am no longer here, I find it to be not just my own souls purpose but everyone’s. Whatever you believe in spiritually, we all carry a responsibility to cultivate a better world by creating.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a fiber artist and occasionally model, I first learned to crochet from my grandmother who showed me how to hold the hook and yarn in my hands. Beyond that, I am self taught through trial and error. I enjoy making unconventional crochet items but most importantly garments and accessories. Fashion is a huge form of self expression to me. I’m very happy to be apart of this new wave of fiber artists. As a first generation Latine, I had to learn that no matter what I pursued I must always strive for success and have fun while doing it! Rediscovering my inner artist was not easy as it took many years to resurface through early adulthood. Don’t waste your time chasing something you’re unsure about. Find something you love and be horrible at it unapologetically! It’s important to me to pursue art not because of where it can lead me, but how it can free my spirit. It’s a powerful tool to finding ourselves, our emotional processes and expression. The tedious nature crochet has provided for me has gifted me the practice of patience and a whole lot of counting. I hope to inspire others to be mindful of their own consumption and remember our extraordinary nature to create instead.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The best brunch spot in Denver is Onefold in my opinion, $15 chilaquiles are lowkey worth it after a few mimosas. My not so hidden gem is Horsetooth reservoir in Fort Collins, it has always been one of my favorite sights to see even if I’ve seen it over 100 times. I love the Mercury Cafe in Denver as well so cozy and jazzy. Of course you can’t forget the local library, go get a library card and utilize it!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom Veronica has been my biggest advocate in my life’s journey. She has always supported my career prospects even when I was lost. That no matter what it is that I chose to do, I had to always give it my all. From me dropping out of college at 19 to returning back to school full time at 24, working in residential construction to being offered my current position as a librarian assistant (go to your local library btw.) Even as a “starving artist,” she has supported my projects and celebrated my smallest wins. Te quiero mami! I am surrounded by a circle of beautifully creative individuals, my loving partner Noah and family who have seen me blossom throughout this journey. I’m so thankful for all of them!
