Meet Bevin Luna | Musician, Music Curator & Small Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Bevin Luna and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bevin, how do you think about risk?
There are so many factors involved with risk. The first thing that comes to mind is uncertainty. When considering risk through my decision making process with my music business, I always remind myself to consider the potential magnitude of the result based on the risk itself. When choosing to pursue an opportunity, I ask myself, “will the uncertainty of this risk present a high probability to propel my business forward? Will this result in a product or a partnership of high quality?” I also think about the likelihood of something beneficial versus something detrimental happening based on taking that risk. Accepted risk is necessary to move forward; however, it can also stifle progress and creativity if risks are taken carelessly. It’s a fine line that requires confidence in the decisions that are being made.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is my music. I really enjoy performing and curating music for people to enjoy and experience in unique settings. I am a multiracial LGBTQ identifying woman who sees the world through many lenses. Being Black, White, Latina and female, I feel that my perspective is important to share. I am steeped in the influences from my mixed heritage. I’m proud to be a part of a family of musicians from both the Dominican Republic and Tennessee. Both places are very rich in musical history and traditions. In the beginning, music was just a part of daily life for me. It truly has always been one of the the loves of my life. As I’ve gained more experience and committed more time to professional development, I’ve realized that it takes years of hard work to achieve success as a musician. It’s not easy at times. It takes resilience, being able to hear lots of “no’s” and still keep going. One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is to keep showing up with intention. My sound is interesting because I incorporate influences from early rock and roll, grunge, country, soul, blues, punk, alternative, and world music. Much of my work is at the intersection of many cultures including the American South, the Caribbean, and West Africa. I have plans to record as many projects as possible to represent each of these areas of influence throughout my musical journey. I can’t wait to share with all of you!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For food, I’d recommend the Welton St. Cafe Home of Mona’s, Music City Hot Chicken at True Brewing, and La Loma Mexican Restaurant. Definitely grab a drink and catch live music at Meadowlark Bar. Wander around the RiNo Art District with the interactive map. Go for a hike and a show at Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre, take a stroll through the Denver Botanic Gardens, attend the City Park Jazz series, see a show at Levitt Pavilion, the Gothic Theatre, and the Ogden Theatre, visit the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, MCA Denver, attend anything at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, and go see a women’s rugby game with the Colorado Gray Wolves at Infinity Park in Glendale.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There is an organization in Fort Collins, CO called the Music District and they are a gathering place for musicians and artists to form partnerships, build community, and gain experience in developing their businesses through marketing, production, legal advice, artist management, and product development. They have been incredibly supportive of my music and they have helped to develop my business into something that is sustainable. With their assistance, I’ve shifted my priorities and really feel that I have the momentum needed to make my music business successful for years to come. Big shout out to the Music District and their whole crew!!
