We had the good fortune of connecting with Bill McKay and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bill, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am inspired by people. The stories that weave through peoples lives, the common themes of love, heartbreak, passion, hopes and dreams for a brighter future. All people have memories-loss, pain-but also beautiful thoughts of loved ones, moments written in time that have crafted the trajectory of their lives. These memories also form the movement to a brighter future, the search for love and to make the world a better place. Playing music for people engages their memories, and taps into the universal consciousness- these themes of love, loss, hope, fear, and our common bond of humanity. I’m also inspired by nature- the beautiful world surrounding us and all the creatures we share this planet with.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been playing music since i was a very young person, singing in church choir from the age of 6, and starting piano lessons from that age as well. Being a performing and touring musician starting in my 20s has had many struggles and also many brilliant and joyful moments. Persistance, patience, dedication, being respectful and good to work with,-these qualities move your career forward. I’ve been sober for over ten years now, and the struggles involved with a lifetime of addiction and abuse were the biggest challenge to overcome.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A concert at Red Rocks. A river rafting trip. Hiking and camping just about anywhere in the Colorado mountains. Hot springs! A night out in downtown Denver eating and seeing great music- the symphony, jazz, or a dance performance.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have a wonderful and supportive family, and am surrounded by many incredible friends in the music business. So many people have been there for me through a long career.
