Meet Brad Randolph | Boulder Karate owner and head instructor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brad Randolph and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brad, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
As a martial arts studio, we provide a solid self defense training curriculum. However, this isn’t the only benefit our students receive. We have been told that our karate community has given students the confidence to take on difficult situations at work, school, and in their personal lives.
One example is a story that a mother told us recently. She took her 3 boys (all karate students of ours) to the doctor for routine shots. None of them looked forward to this. The youngest brother suggested that they close their eyes and meditate like they do in karate class while the doctor administers the shot. To the mother’s surprise, they each took a turn meditating and taking their shot like a pro. She said, “At that moment, I knew their karate training was worth it.”

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
One of the main things that set us apart from other martial arts schools is weekly personal training for every student. Along with our age-appropriate Group Classes, we also provide a 30-minute Semi-Private Lesson each week. This allows the instructor to fine-tune each student’s skills, show them new material required for their next rank, and answer any questions they have.
We started with a corporate martial arts organization in 1999, and after some political drama from leadership in 2010, we decided to branch off and become our own Dojo. Our mission is to provide the best self defense training available in a family-friendly environment. It’s the perfect balance of solid training, discipline, and fun.
The most rewarding part of our job is hearing success stories from students and parents. They keep coming in, which tells us we are doing what we set out to do: through martial arts training, help our students become better people.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Keeping it simple, several of us karate instructors (especially myself) are avid hikers. We would recommend a visit to Royal Arch and a good workout hike up Mt. Sanitas. We love BJ’s restaurant on 28th St., Torchy’s Tacos on Pearl, and locally owned Dot’s Diner on 28th St.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to Shoutout to Kaley Dysert and Jon Kalvig, my top two instructors. Without their dedication to our Dojo, we wouldn’t be where we are today. They have been a major influence in our top notch self defense curriculum, they teach excellent lessons with our students’ best interests at heart, and take care of all the little tasks behind the scenes to our Dojo runs smoothly. I love this team!
