We had the good fortune of connecting with Brad Tomecek and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi brad, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I have always enjoyed drawing and making so the path to architecture was a fairly obvious choice. Out of college, my passion for all things design helped make ‘work’ less of a burden and more about play. Working endless hours came naturally because this act was always in the interest of learning and exploring. Moving to a state where there are plenty of outdoor activities helped build in a type of checks and balances. Over time, life experiences happen and one starts a family, has kids and then you realize there are more significant things than a sole focus on your interests. I very much still consider myself a design-head however I try to stay in the moment and give attention to those who matter most.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We see architecture as an instrument to connect with the landscape and fabric around us. We focus intensely on the site and our clients needs. Each project and client pairing are uniquely different and we channel our energy in materializing this union. The reward of translating thoughts, ideas, and words into something built and occupiable in the landscape is the ultimate reward. The process is quite a bit of hard work but the end results can be astonishing. On my path, asking the right questions to those around me was a great source of comfort as a young professional navigating the complexity of this discipline. Remembering to ‘play’ when designing as well as keeping attention on budget is a skill i am constantly honing. Being true to our craft and seamlessly connect function to place is the core of our approach.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Denver has the best of both worlds being a city AND having the mountains close by. Whether taking in a play or snowboarding on the continental divide, it has something for everyone. One of my favorite trips to take is to Crested Butte. Driving across the beautiful agrarian landscape over mountain passes and through valleys offer incredible diversity of landscape. Crested Butte as a town is very charming with some of the best food and skiing I have found over the last 25 years. The museum culture is strong with a campus core that includes the Denver Art Museum, Clyfford Still Museum, and Kirkland Art Museum.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I run my business with my wife Christa. Christa is a very savvy business person who is our CFO, COO, CIO, HR, PR, and so on. She enables the rest of the team to focus on all things design. It’s a wonderful partnership that yields a strong design family culture. Hopefully some good work is produced along the way too!!! Additionally, we have had many competent team members who have contributed to the success of the firm over the years. All of them contribute in their own way and bring their own personalities to bear. If you are interested in running a design firm the proper way, I would suggest checking out ‘the business of design’ by Keith Granet.
