Meet Christie Buchele | Denver Comedian and Comedy Teacher

We had the good fortune of connecting with Christie Buchele and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christie, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
I think the most important lesson I have had to learn is to let go of short term income in favor of long term goals. There were times when I was running weekly shows and the profits from that were paying my rent. However, the shows were not especially successful because the venues were not supportive and they were not enthusiastic about what I was doing. But the money was guaranteed either way it was difficult to walk away. As soon as I walked away from opportunities that I was only hanging on to for financial reasons, more fulfilling (and lucrative) options appeared. Don’t hang on to anything that you are only doing for the money!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Christie Buchele is an accomplished standup comic from Denver, Colorado. Making a name for herself by sharing the heart-wrenching and hilariously raw realities of being a woman with a disability. Christie has been featured on Viceland’s, Flophouse; Hidden America with Jonah Ray; Laughs on Fox; First Look on NBC, and of course, LMAO on Only Fans TV. Christie has performed on Limestone Comedy Festival in Bloomington, Denver’s own High Plains Comedy Festival and 208 in Boise. She starred in and wrote for the Project DU film Scary Lucy which has won multiple awards at film festivals around the country. As Director of Stand-Up at Rise Comedy Theater in Denver Colorado, Christie empowers young comics to hit the stage running and tell their stories with confidence.
Christie has been described as “Brave” for leaving the house in that body, Christie’s comedy has been described as “funny despite what she talks about…” and “Uncomfortable..” by Christie’s mom. She was chosen to open up for the likes Josh Blue, Marc Maron and David Cross.
Christie co-hosted a witty relationship advice podcast, Empty Girlfriend, which earned best Comedy Podcast by Westword Magazine and best Podcast for Sexpot Comedy in 2017. As one third of the Denver Comedy powerhouse, The Pu**y Bros, Christie reps the Mile High City hard while crushing audiences with a wry, biting style that’s a bit sweet, a and a little bit surly; proving time and again you can say almost anything with a smile on your face and a gimp in your step.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take people to eat at Buckhorn Exchange, a movie at the Mayan Theater, a show at Red Rocks, a Beer at Ratio Beerworks, a comedy show at the Comedy Works on Larimer, a bike ride around all the city parks (City, Cheeseman, Wash & Sloans Lake). I would go have a drink at Lakeview Lounge at Sunset, a walk through the Botanic Gardens, if its fall I would take them too see the leaves in the mountains, and maybe dinner one more time at Angelo’s Taverna. If it’s summer we also have to go to Water World.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The one person I would give a shout out to is my mentor Deacon Gray. He was the New Talent Coordinator at Comedy Works for like 15 years and he was dedicated to developing people and cared about their success. Comedy, stand up especially, can kind of turn their nose up at “comedy classes” but I saw the impact Deacon had. Unfortunately, we lost Deacon to cancer a few years ago but in his last days the people he took care of took care of him and there was a long line of people that came from all over the country to sit around his bed and shoot the shit, make jokes, and thank him for what he taught them. It was at that time that I realized how much I missed, something both me and Deacon had gone to school for. After he was gone I looked for any opportunity to fill in where he was missing. I figured there was no better way to spend the last days of your life and I would be happy if my last days looked a lot like his. Denver Comedy is so strong in no small part to David “Deacon” Gray.
