We had the good fortune of connecting with Brenna Freestone-Gilbert and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brenna, what is the most important factor behind your success?
At Bloom Floral Boutique we embrace the artistry of flowers. Our arrangements are custom designed for each client, with thought and attention put into each detail – the occasion; favorite color; favorite flower; the recipients personality & style – are all taken into consideration as we create a floral work of art. In fact, our designers often come to flower design from a different artform. We believe each arrangement is a living, breathing sculpture created to communicate your thoughts and feelings with those you love.
In our modern world sustainability is paramount. We believe in practicing sustainable floristry, taking extra care to use environmentally friendly mechanics and shrinking our carbon footprint by using local flowers whenever possible. Whether it is seeking out a new local flower farm, or hunting down that perfect imported flower for your wedding, we take pride in our highly curated floral selection.
Our unique outlook on artistry and sustainability allow us to stand out from the competition. We are NOT your grandmother’s flower shop, and it shows!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I came to flowers late in life. Living in NYC, I was working as a freelance Prop Stylist for commercial video and photo shoots. The hours were long, the work thankless. On occasion I would need to include a floral arrangement for the shoot. At first I would order one to be made, but I soon found that I enjoyed making them myself. I could easily spend hours creating a few small pieces for a photo shoot.
It wasn’t long before I got burnt out on the 20 hour workdays and the hard and fast deadlines. I needed something more relaxed! I thought and thought about what I wanted to pursue, how I wanted to change my trajectory, when it hit me: Any day spent with flowers was the best day ever!
So I saved some money to put myself through a floristry course. It changed my life for the better in so many ways! I was finally practicing an artform every day! No more working 80 hours in 3 days once a month. I had steady work that not only wasn’t soul-crushing, it was down-right fulfilling!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If we had a week to do anything in and around Fort Collins, I would take them on lots of nature walks up near Horsetooth, or up the Poudre Canyon, and collect wildflowers (I would of course have a Foraging Permit in hand…)!
I would eat dinner out every night: The Regional, The Rio, The Still, Blue Agave, Cafe Vino. Breakfast out a LOT: The Rainbow, La Creperie. Drinks at Social or Ace Gillette’s.
I’d show off Old Town with our amazing local shopping, at Golden Poppy, Esscentuals, Kansas City Kitty, and The Cupboard.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I certainly could not have succeeded without the constant love and support of both my husband Caleb, and my son Felix. They have always been there to offer support, advice, direction, opinions, and sometimes just hugged me while I screamed into the void!
I owe much of my inspiration to my time spent under the tutelage of Bella Meyer of fleursBELLA in New York City. Her concepts of color, texture, and movement blow my mind.
The camaraderie of Leanna Kearney (fleursBELLA) and Aimee Kirby (Ferox Folia), as well as that of my sister Jessica Freestone, has kept me moving forward. Without them, I would have given into the self-criticism long ago.
