We had the good fortune of connecting with Brent McDonald and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brent, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think the most important factor behind the success of Apothecary Extracts is the solid leadership team we have built. The core team has been here since the very beginning , and we focus on building leaders. We work together as a cohesive unit from extraction, to cultivation to our retail locations. We all must communicate and work together weekly to ensure everyone is on the same page.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My name is Brent McDonald, Im the Marketing and Sales Director for Apothecary Extracts Colorado and Oklahoma. We are a multi-state extraction , cultivation and dispensary chain founded in Colorado. We focus on educating the community and bring connoisseur quality extracts at affordable prices. Im a marketing / branding guy at heart, with a huge passion for cannabis extracts and the many medicinal benefits they offer. What sets Apothecary Extracts apart is our “Ambrosia” line of single source extracts. We control the process from soil to oil and it allows us to truly dial in our procedure and put out a very high quality concentrate that offers the end user a really enjoyable experience. We focus on rare and unusual terpenee profiles that truly modulate the users high and how it makes them feel. How did you get where you are today professionally? I have been working in the cannabis industry for 10+ years. My career started after he completed a year-long internship with Flavor Group Marketing Agency in San Francisco, CA. Over the year I learned the ins and outs of traditional marketing techniques while working on marketing/branding and social media projects for fortune 500 companies like Red Bull, Scion, Hitachi and Adidas. After the internship, as Colorado had just legalized recreational marijuana, I jumped all in opening up my own marketing/branding company Woody Creek Supply Co. I had identified a demand for marketing/branding in alternative industries including cannabis/smoking accessories, and extraction and cultivation companies in the Colorado cannabis industry. After three years and 100’s of projects involving some of the largest cannabis brands in Colorado, I was hired at Apothecary Extracts to work on marketing/branding/extraction full time. I closed down Woody Creek Supply Co to focus solely on the Apothecary Extracts project moving to Colorado Springs in the summer of 2016. Since then Apothecary Extracts has gone on to become one of the most recognized extraction companies in Colorado. In 2018 and 2019 I was nominated for Cannabis Business MVP in the National Cannabis Business Awards presented by Cloverleaf University. With the help of an All-Star Team of extraction experts and an amazing production , packaging and cultivation directors, we have managed to emerge at the forefront of cannabis businesses in 2021 recently expanding into over 450 dispensaries in the Oklahoma medical cannabis market.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a week with my best friend to show them the best time ever it would look something like this. As soon as he lands we would start off by heading straight to Apothecary Farms to stock up on the finest cannabis concentrates Colorado has to offer. We would then hit our favorite food truck, Totally Steamed serving up the absolute best steamed sliders on earth. Some of my favorite restaurants Denver has to offer include: ChoLon , Guard and Grace , Fruition , Ragin Hog and Roaming Buffalo BBQ. The week would surely include some live music at Red Rocks or Mission Ballroom (Lettuce, Billy Strings, Tyler Childers, STS9, Railroad Earth, The Motet). We would head off to the Western Slopes for the absolute best skiing Colorado has to offer at Crested Butte Mtn Resort, some of the gnarliest inbound skiing in North America is at The Butte. We would then head to one of the most beautiful places in this great state , Strawberry Hot Springs. After hitting the hot sprngs we would head back to the front range to Greely , Colorado to enjoy a couple of my favorite brewerys, Wiley Roots and Weldwerks. Both off unique and exotic flavor profiles, beer form. I love pairing really good hash and really good beer. The trip wouldn’t be complete without hitting the new Acoma Street Project, socially distanced music Venue and Art Gallery featuring visual art by Android Jones and featuring new DJs each week including Claude Von Stroke, Break Science , and Random Rab.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out our fearless leader at Apothecary Extracts, LeeAnn Wiebe. Her drive, leadership, and work ethic is unmatched in the cannabis industry and I’m honored to work alongside her daily. She focuses on growth and empowering our leadership team to focus on quality, consistency and compliance.
