We had the good fortune of connecting with Bridget Thorpe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bridget, how do you think about risk?
I have had notecard on my desk that reads “Fortune Favors the Bold”. It reminds me that it is necessary to take risks in life in order to move forward, grow, and experience things fully. With that said, a good risk is a measured risk. That is exactly the type of risk I am currently taking with Kahili… My team and I have spent the last 5 years building the business, while I’ve also balanced a corporate position in sustainability advisory. A variety of factors have aligned for my family and I to relocate back to Kauai in order to expand the business. This risk involves leaving the steady corporate income, moving to a different state, and penetrating a competitive marketplace. However, a foundation of 5+ years and other supporting factors make it a measured move and timely step forward. Measurement and strategy will help you take good risks forward. There also comes a point where you need to trust your gut and step into the unknown boldly (even if you don’t feel prepared). The greatest risk in life, ultimately, is not taking one.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Kahili was born on Kauai—a place where raw, natural beauty pulls you to respect the earth and try to leave it better than you found it. I grew up on a farm on the North Shore’s Kahili Street and was inspired to create a sustainable sports bra that combined the beauty of Brazilian and Tahitian swimwear with the durability and athleticism of leading sports brands. After years of advising some of the world’s largest Fortune 500 corporations on how to credibly market their sustainability programs, Kahili’s journey truly began. . . It’s been an uphill road. Beyond finding truly eco innovative materials, it took 5 years to find good people in the USA that could sew a luxe sports bra we were proud of. Our goal is for the world to feel equally proud wearing a Kahili sports bras. That women feel the passion, thoughtfulness, and perseverance behind every stitch. We hope they to take comfort in our ambitious material and manufacturing principles—each rooted in sustainability and the thrill of continually learning. Along the way, we work to deeply unleash others’ joyful, sustainable rhythms. We respect our customers as an intelligent women. And are so happy for their support as we inspire industry progress and help them move through life joyfully.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Although Kahili was founded in Kauai, it has grown over the last 5 years in Denver, Colorado. About 10 minutes outside of Denver, we call Golden home. While visiting, the Sherpa House restaurant off of Washington Street is a MUST. The food is out of this world and the feels are authentic and uplifting. A true gem!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My success is 100% the result of the amazing people who have supported me, both personally and professionally. I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to my husband Elliott, who believes in me to the core. Thank you, Elliott, for everything you have done to make this relocation possible so Kahili can expand and we can wholeheartedly live out our dreams!
