We had the good fortune of connecting with Britt Brashear and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Britt, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was inspired to start a wedding planning business after planning and designing my own wedding. I had so much fun combining my planning and organizational skills with my interest in interior design. Plus, planning a mountain wedding in our little corner of the state was pretty great too. I was an elementary school teacher for 11 years, so it was scary to make the switch and start my own business, but I’m so happy I did! I had been working events throughout the summers of my teaching career; then during my last year teaching, I took business, marketing, and wedding planning classes, helped plan a couple weddings on my own, and assisted a some planners and florists in town with anything they needed help with. I was loving everything about weddings that I knew I found the perfect job for me!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
People have asked me-why wedding planning, it’s so different from teaching. After teaching elementary school, I learned how to be organized, have color coded checklists, get crafty, and how to visualize the flow of what the kiddos would be doing. Wedding planning involves a lot of visualizing, checklists, and crafting too, but I still had a lot to learn switching professions and becoming a business owner. It’s been the best journey though!  Probably because I love everything about weddings.

I have also always loved interior design, so it’s been fun to pivot to event design. I love combining the outdoors with interior design items – such as putting a lounge setup on a mountaintop or hanging lanterns from trees.  Incorporating natural elements with classic and elegant decor is the best. I’m also a big fan of having some mismatched elements that come together for a cohesive design.

Some of my favorite wedding designs include vintage elegant details in combination with the stunning mountains of Crested Butte, a mountain chic wedding at a Eureka Lodge tucked away in Silverton, and I’m so excited for a backyard Moroccan garden party wedding under a canvas tent this summer.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There’s so many things to do in Southwest Colorado! We’d start off by walking to my favorite coffee shop in town – Lola’s Place. Then we’d walk down to all the cute shops on Main St. After that, we’d walk the river trail and find a good picnic spot to watch the kayakers go by.

The next day, we’d get an early start and head to Silverton to hike and swim in an alpine lake. A couple of my favorites are Columbine or Ice Lakes. After that, we’d head into Silverton for some lunch at Avalanche Brewery. That night we’d soak in Durango Hot Springs after a big day of adventuring.

Then we’d have a paddle board day on the Animas River. We’d put in near Dalton Ranch and have a long float to town. We’d finish the day eating some Mexican food at Taco Libre.

The next day, we’d drive the San Juan Skyway loop to some of my other favorite mountain towns. The loop takes you from Durango to Silverton to Ouray to Telluride, and back to Durango. We’d stop for a little hike at a waterfall in Ouray and for a gondola ride and lunch in Telluride.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to give a shoutout to my husband, Ben. He encouraged me to start this business and has been so supportive through every part of the journey. Ben also does so many behind the scene things for Mountain Arrow. I couldn’t have done it without him. He’s the best.

Another shoutout to my parents. My dad and I have talked for hours about business things. He’s given me so much guidance and encouragement ever since I presented my business plan to him. Plus, we have lots of fun talking business together. My interior design mom has also been so supportive. I’m thankful I picked up a few of her design skills. I’m excited to have her help me with some weddings soon!

I’d also like to give a shoutout to the wedding community in Durango. It’s been amazing to work alongside such talented vendors and I’m thankful to be a part of the community.
