We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooke Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brooke, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk-taking…

I believe it is the only way to actually live.

There are normalized risks, which are everyday things such as driving; we risk crashing. Or walking; we risk rolling an ankle. Small risks we take every day to get from point A to point B.

Now. There are bigger risks like the one I took last week. I decided to spend all my money on a trip to Nantucket to go shark fishing, in a 14-foot zodiac with a professional shark tagger. All for a YouTube video… Now you might think that is a huge risk.

I see it as a huge opportunity. One that could go viral.

I see my YouTube channel like a new store owner views their shop. You have to put money in to get money out.

I decided after university I did’nt want to work a nine-to-five job and chase the dollar. I am not huge on the short-term game theory. I am more of a long-term game type of girl. I signed up for a 10-year commitment to being a YouTuber. That is the risk I am taking. 10 years of my life chasing a dream. I am 3 years in and I feel good about where I am at.

I feel at home creating. Although some months are more sparse than others. I don’t let that stop me. I want to keep going. I want to keep growing. And the only way to do that is to wake up and start taking calculated risks. If you stick with a risk long enough and adapt accordingly it will always pay off. It might just take time.

I am no expert. Nor am I some multi-millionaire. So take my advice with a grain of salt.

Live Fearlessly,

Brooke Johnson

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
There were several questions that I asked myself one day that really inspired me to pick up a camera:

1. I wonder what it would have been like if my 80-year-old grandmother had a camera when she was my age?

2. I wonder what it would have been like if there was vlogging when Anne Frank was around, what would that have done to how we understand history?

3. What is going to be my legacy, am I going to have one?

4. A are my great great great grandchildren going to Google me, and if they do what are they going to find?

To answer that last question… Hopefully they find their great great great Bad Ass grandma!

I am so excited to keep documenting, to keep chasing the stories, I am excited to keep growing. I love The path that I am on is not easy. I sleep in my car to chase my dreams. I pinch pennies where I can. I am

The number one thing I have learned and am most proud of is how confident I have become in being different. Which translates directly to being confident in myself.

I hope everyone gets to feel confident in their own skin. I hope people aren’t afraid of chasing their dreams. I hope the work I do inspires people to chase the experience.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them on a week-long car camping road trip with no map and no GPS.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My first introduction to YouTube being a sustainable career path was when I worked with @GaryVee and his team for a week-long intensive.

I owe it to Gary and his team for teaching me everything I know about consistency and content. He is truly the reason I haven’t stopped doing what I am doing.
