We had the good fortune of connecting with Calandra Bodilis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Calandra, can you tell us about an impactful book you’ve read and why you liked it or what impact it had on you?
One of the most impactful books I read before I started my own business was the “The E Myth Revisited” by Michael E. Gerber. At just 16 years old I had a dream, goal or vision as one might call it, of opening and owning my own hair salon one day. So, I started my check list of tasks by graduating beauty school, obtaining my license and landing an apprenticeship in a high end salon. I was “great at doing hair” and “you should own your own salon” many people said to me….so that meant I should open my own business right?!
This book was the first book my business mentor told me to read, it changed my entire perspective of what it meant to own your business, and the impact it had was eye opening. I knew I had a huge road ahead of me and I learned to focus on my strengths and find support where I needed it.
This book was so important that after year 3 of being in business I realized that I needed to reread the book as I know had a better standing of what being a business owner is. I highly recommend anyone that is thinking about being an entrepreneur read this book FIRST!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe that I am a creative individual that loves to bring beauty into the world by making clients feel confident and valued. My motto in life and for my salon is “looking good is feeling good”!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite spot in the city is my neighborhood in the highlands area of downtown Denver. I love a good Sunday brunch after my favorite Barre3 studio in highlands square.
I also love the art district in Denver, the art museum is a must followed by a patio happy hour.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband Stephan Bodilis is my first business mentor and true entrepreneur, he encouraged me to take a “risk” and live my dream. I also want to give a shoutout to the “Leading Ladies” book club, we are a group of amazing women that recommend books that help our businesses and leadership thrive.
